Snarls ease road toll

l

OUTGOING VicRoads chief executive David Anderson has admitted traffic congestion has been used as a weapon in the war on the state road toll.

Mr Anderson, in charge of the state's roads, registrations and licensing, delivered a damning self-analysis at a traffic conference opened yesterday by Transport Minister Peter Batchelor.

The VicRoads boss shocked those in attendance when he said congestion was not necessarily a bad thing as it prevented crashes.
He even admitted that his organisation had deliberately cultivated clogged traffic.

"Is it better to have fewer crashes or is it better to have freer traffic? We're going with the fewer crashes at the moment," he said. "We've used congestion to stop crashes. We've created congestion."

Mr Anderson's remarks come before he steps down next month after five years as the state's roads chief.

The congestion convert was appointed by the Bracks Government, which is now holding an inquiry into how to eradicate traffic jams in Melbourne.

The Government has consistently attributed its low road tolls to "a strict road safety regime" with zero tolerance policing.

Mr Anderson labelled some of VicRoads' own work "bloody embarrassing" and said improved road safety was due to worsening traffic logjams.

I reckon Vicroads just pharked the Vic Transport and Police Ministers

so I stayed overnite in Parramatta in one of the
hotels....it used to take 50-60 mins from Parrammatta
to Smithfield which is what???...about 9-10kms

I have since changed jobs....the 6 kms I travel each day
takes about 8-10 mins and a cupla mins of that is sitting

And whats is wrong with Victorian roads??? Hmmmm wellll????

Stay off the main roads and all is good. Although one improvement could be a speed hump at the entrance to my court. A Bracks size speed hump. Lay the prick down and cover him in ashphelt. It's all the low life prick is good for

But your just a hippy public transport taking accountant.

Work is 29km from home for me, and can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1:20 to go each way. usually takes 35 mins to get in, but due to the rain it took 55 this morning.

the EPA would not allow it
due to future underground contamination of the soil

maybe they should take a drive on the westgate.

The only reason crashes happen on the westgate, is due to people being frustrated with the congestion.

I think his theory is full of shit :!:

Usually takes me 2 minutes to get to work...
The congestion in the hallway can be a bit of a problem, but can generally be negotiated with bit a yelling at the wife and kids (hallway rage). I pick up a coffee on the way thru as well...

If I have to go into Sydney, I usually allow 1 1/2 hours. It can take anywhere from 50 minutes to 2 hours depending on what the traffic is up too.....
