When to upgrade your bike...

Cougar and I were discussing bike upgrades the other day, she is planning to hold on to hers forever, but my bike has got a bit over 43k on the clock now.... Should I sell before I get too close to 50k? Or will the resell value not be affected all that much?

over 30K and you resale will drop, other threshholdswhen dont seem to have the same effect. hence why i wont trade the 9, with over 100K on it it will be worth nowt.

but in respect to getting a new bike i'd say when you learn to ride the one you got

therefore i'll be keeping the one i got for a while yet.

30k seems kinda low :( That means I would have to upgrade every year....

Interesting thread, as my bike is nearing the 100k. I suppose it's cheaper to keep it rather than upgrade ? From the book value I am already making money

Of course looking at the $12k zx6r gives me a drool... or maybe just wait until the 2005 Z6R drops to around $7k mark which is around the year 2010 :D

some people would be hard pressed doing 30K in 5-10 years. sad isnt it.

I got my bike for riding & thats what I intend to do

I've put 6000 kays on the work bike in the last 3 weeks. Ny arse is shaped like a BMW motorcycle seat.

As for when to upgrade? I guess you need to look at the reasons why you want to upgrade.
Do you just like shiney new things?
Has your current bike worn out to a point that it's cheaper to replace it than to keep fixing it?
Do you find that your bike lacks power you NEED to go faster?
Does the bike no longer suit your purposes or riding style?

I guess I just dont want the bike to be worth too little when I sell it that I end up having to make a huge investment to buy a new one...

welcome to owning a motorcycle mate!!

i wanted to sell my blade & buy a zx10r last year...but i got offered less than $5k (in fact they wouldnt offer me nething, greeny offered me $4k to stunt/track)...so i figured for $4k i might as well keep it till it becomes a full track toy, and i buy a new road toy...

mind u mines got a bit of damage, but granted the 65,000km is the real killer...

After investigating paying off my loan in a lump sum and checking out refinancing I have decided I might aswell just buy a car.... put less K's on the clock and eventually sell it for only a little... Having a look on some of the bike sales places I should still be able to get about 8k in a few years so will reconsider it again at that point....

When it no longer scares you to open it up its time to get something faster....ooooh yeah!

In all honesty i've never had a new enough bike to worry about the KM's affecting the resale value :$, Though i will mention that at this point i *may* be upgrading in 6-8 months time, and if my plans hold true, then no its not a kawa, it'll hopefully be a BMW 8)   :o

Aside from the fun/games with being on bike learners/provisionals, I generally plan to buy a vehicle for the long term (to the point where KM's travelled are only a secondary issue).

That's generally the idea ;)
Big difference in resale around that 30k mark.
Some of us realise that 50k+ isn't actually alot - but most want new but without the new price.

Keep it until there is no finance on it, buy another one and put the old one on the track. Instant track toy that has cost you nothing, and a new bike every 3-5 years

Aprox sums

$16,000 bike
5 year loan at 10%
monthly premium $350

Add $1000 to put it on the track at the end (minus sale of un-needed road parts)

Then get another bike on similar terms and you have a free track bike every five years
