Motorcycling Champ Possible Rally Starter

Tuesday, 11 July 2006

World motorcycling champion Valentino Rossi could be heading to
New Zealand later this year in a switch of motorsport codes.

The MotoGP rider is in negotiations to drive for the Subaru World
Rally Championship team which has the Rally of New Zealand in its
sights.

Rally New Zealand general manager Paul Mallard said it was too early to
say whether Rossi would drive in New Zealand in the November event,
but hoped to get confirmation within the next few weeks.

Mallard said if the 79-time Grand Prix winner did compete here he would
be a big drawcard and was likely to be highly competitive with the backing
of a highly regarded team such as Subaru.

The Italian, who has been riding for Yamaha this year, is no stranger to
rallying, having briefly competed in the Rally of Britain in 2002, retiring on
the first leg.

He has also competed in Italy's Monza rally for the past three years, finishing
second last year.

Earlier this year he passed up an opportunity to switch to Formula One and
join the Ferrari team.

Rossi has been the most dominant rider in the MotoGP series for the past
five years and is currently third in the championship.

even i can do that... lol

rossi, im so over him, though he does have talent, and i think he will stay for another seasion or two, and win them, just so he has total bragging rights, well more so than now.

Valentino is still the best rider in MotoGP.

Melandri is also showing himself to be very fast, also very brave with some of the moves he makes, and smart enough to know when to make them.

Pedrosa is fast but I hate him :x I always cheer when he makes mistakes or crashes out

Same...

I think Rossi wants to be the only person to take a world title on the 990...

Now the new challenge of backing it up on the 800 will be interesting. 8)

Stoner is doing very very well considering it is his first year in the big class.... I think we can expect a lot from him in the future if he can just stop crashing...

I don't like anyone who wins all the time.. they should take different challenge if they did. But damn ... winning a race fro 10th position and a close one too!!! Awesome.

IMO Rossi is the Michael Jordan of today.
even those who don't like bikes know of him and at least know he's the best (even if they don't know why)

Jordan left basketball after winning the '93 championship and went to baseball in the minor leagues, and frankly he wasn't any good. better than most but not good enough for someone of his ability.

if rossi were to leave bikes for another sport, i reckon it'd be a similar situation. he'd draw crowds, but not perform to the standards that would be expected.

He'd be smart to stay on the bike. Jordan lost a little bit of his majic when he came back. i'd hate to see rossi do the same thing.
if he wants new challenges (tho he's got one with the 800s coming in) jump on a slower bike.
