Seriously I'd hate to see anything like rigid guidelines or rules for a ride come out of this. People do normally fall into an acceptable order (not always the same) - we just didn't that day.
For example I don't always want to be stuck at the back - even though I'm on the postie. I've been at the front, the middle, and the back - and all have worked (I think). So long as you let faster riders pass you on the straights, and so long as you overtake safely, it should be all good.

I agree with what are saying but difficult thing as new people to the organised rides might be quite quick but because they are not known or part of an inner group, one person may think they are "entitled" to go in front even though they are slower and do not want to give up the position as they are "keeping" up with mates.

I think if you are in front and you can see someone tailing then move aside as a gesture of courtesy, and as the person behind it is their responsibility to overtake in a safe manner. Reality is though egos come into play and some (including myself on occasion) want to have a little dice.

yeah i know what you mean, but yo see it happen all the time, some brainwave overtakes on the straight bits them wants to putt putt the bends.

i always make the fishing rod gesture then go huntin! and when i hunt, i dont generally hunt nicely

Ahhhhh......... Hindsight what a wonderfull thing.... we can always say, what we should have done after an event.......
Let me know when your gunna crash your bike and i'll tell when to stay home for the day............

When going on a group ride, we need to think for tomorrow, have a plan in place, speak up, say your piece and don't ever assume about other riders....
We all know what we want from a ride, but...... do you know what everybody else wants from their day..........

Shit happens and shit will always happen somewhere......assume it will happen before it happens, and if it doesn't, then excellent you covered all your bases and you ride away.... If shit does happen, well, accept you would have changed if you knew it was gunna happen, but you didn't know.... so be it.............

Enjoy your journey wherever it leads....... Don't dwell on the past, learn from it and progress...... We can't change what happens in life, but we may be able to prevent a similar situation by changing our thoughts in the future..........

And it's always fun for the spectators to watch you go hunting... even if we only get to see one or two corners of the chase

hey guys, i know this inncident happened a while ago, but after seeing the Classic KSRC photos/video thread, it opened my eyes to this topic, after a long read through this, you guys are a true inspiration to all riders out there, and this opens your eyes to the dangers out there, expecially to new riders on the road!

I cant believe how lucky everyone is to have come out of it with the injuries that you did, i could have been far worse! my heart goes out to all riders involved! and hope everyone has recovered fully, i could imagine the mental images would still be haunting, but am glad that you all are still here to share this trully amazing story and the bond that has come out of this between you all is incredible!

That last piece of advise is the best. In almost all riders, the bike and tyres are far more capable than the riders thinks they are (and more capable than the rider too). It's better to try and get round than grab the brakes and guarantee you don't! If I go in a bit hot I'm just telling myself, "get off the brakes, get off the brakes". It hasn't failed yet.

Im a fairly new rider myself, and im still learning that my bike is far more capable of what i'am as a rider and what i think as a rider!
the first few times i hit the twistys, i admit i shat myself! (not in a bad way ) just learning how to lean properly and judging the angle of the corner, finding the right lines, most of all when to brake and when not to! still it goes through my mind SHIT! BRAKE BRAKE BRAKE! as i come in too hot on some corners but i'am realising that if i go with it and shift my weight correctly it becomes really smooth and natural, the few times i had hit the brakes i found it was a hell of alot harder to correct myself and start veering towards bush and thats when shit starts to hit the fan!(or back of your pants )

the hardest thing i found was to have faith and trust in your machine, knowing that you only have 2-3inches of rubber on each wheel touching the road can make it difficult to have that faith, but that over time becomes something that you get over (sort of) i still have doubts sometimes expecially riding in the wet thinking to myself FUCK! are my wheels gonna come out from underneith me if i turn this corner? and usually back right off and putt around it

i have been lucky and havent come off yet, but unfortunatly i know that one day its kinda inevitable, having people around to talk to and get advice from really helps prepare you for whats out there on the road and how to manage a situation if your in one, and most of all teach you how to be a better rider and to ride properly, i always found i learn best from observing other riders and following there lines while watching the way they lean and how they are shifting there weight even watching there brake light to understand when and when not to brake and its something with only time and experience can you trully learn

give you a tip, never EVER think of how much rubber is actually on the road... it gets scary

do some track days and build your confidence that way and your road riding will go through the roof
