I put in my time in shitboxes, too, in the early and mid 1990's, in a shitty part of Sydney. No insurer would touch me.
You should have moved to Canberra sooner then

In that event, have your people call my people. I_could_have my arm twisted into letting my '01 6R go (three and a half years; it's getting to be time to move on).

I've got a Z750 as a loaner while the 10 is getting its first service. Not a bad little scoot I must admit

I have a rating one and I have never had full comp' in my life, hadn't even had a policy until now for a truck, bike or car. Suncorp just asked a few questions like if I had had a stack in the last 5 years and if I had recorded a driving conviction in five years. I had been disqualified for 2 years for 2nd drink drive and I told them, they asked if I had made any claims which I havn't.
My monthly premium payment is $104 per month for a 2005 ZX12R - age 37 - with an excess of 400 bucks. This premium will go down $400 p/a next year too.

($1248 p/a to $848 p/a) The year after it is suppose to go down again. *shrugs*
So shop around and haggle, put on a sob story like ya have 3 sets of quads in hospital and all need special treatment that costs a fortune - whatever.

Vash,
You might want to look at 3rd Party Fire and Theft - Western QBE offer in it NSW. It's no good it you have a NCB 'cause they don't apply it (meant that the 3rd Party F&T was more expensive for me than Full Comp) but it will help you build a NCB for the future.
... don't ask me wether you should insure it, I don't have a clue

but if you decide to this might help (I think it's about 25% of the cost of Full Comp)

That's what this site is all about mate... you will get differing opinions, but if kept nice they all work towards better understanding of what bike riders think and go through...
Me, I have full comp for the first time (first bike worthy of it) so "I think there for I am"...
Cheers

Gotta say for the most part I'm with I-K on this one.
Getting full-comp insurance can be a right bitch, and you're most likely better off saving your money. However, in my opinion you're best off just gettin third party fire and theft, its bloody cheap, will protect you if you run into someone else, or god forbid your bike gets stolen (which isn't a very hard thing to do). So for that, its definatley worth it, and even me (19 yrs old) riding a 2001 ZX7R get that for $200 a year. Which is SFA.
When it comes to comprehensive, unless you're over 25 and never had any incidents yadda yadda etc, you'd be insane to go full-comp straight off the bat. But if, you get third party, that does have the benefit of bringing you're ratings down, and if you look around properly you'll be able to ensure your bike for $500 a year.
Guys I know are insuring CBR600s and R1s for that price, full comp. Which, like I-K said, if you can get there you'd be silly not too.
Next, in my opinion getting a personal loan for the entire price, or near entire price of a bike is blatantly stupid. Dealer finance is a bloody rip off, and an unsecured loan ain't that much better. You're much better off saving your pennies and buying the thing outright, or at least getting at LEAST half the price deposit. The less time you spend paying off a bloody loan the better, particularly when those loan funds aren't earning you money and its to buy something that only loses value.

Ummm, Kempy, I think you might find that your $200-a-year policy is for third party property only. The only thing it'll cover your bike for is damage inflicted by an uninsured other party-at-fault, up to a certain maximum ($3000 in my case).
If it's really third party, fire and theft (which, whenever I've sniffed quotes for it out, only came to something like 15% cheaper than full comp), then I want to know who's offering this. I want a piece of it, too.
Also, I remember being all excited and fighting an urge to do cartwheels with the approach of my 25th birthday, going "All right. Cheap insurance, here I come.". Started ringing up for more quotes, and got "No, the threshold is now 29."... well, fakyaz, then.
