otherwise you could splash out and spend $2500 for a 2JZ-GTE which is a turbo supra motor, but for a 3L twin turbo they make 430nm of torque standard, which for a 1993 motor is more than then new 5.7L LS1 makes!
Otherwise if you wanna go cheap and cheerful a 1JZ-GTE 2.5L Twin Turbo, makes a beefy 380nm.
I did have a supra with a 2JZ and we ran 15psi with intercooler and all that jazz and it made over 550nm of torque, so you'll have no worries carrying that beast around. Some food for thought though!
Now Saki normally I would support you as you know but Maaattte ....
Don't you think a 4.5lt L6 (80/100 series) with Safari turbo kit to haul that lardy pommy ass around would be far better??
But then thinking about it the Chev is and has always been by far the easiest Jag heart transplant!![The bellhousing bolt pattern is actually the same as the original Jag box (TH400) on all small block chevs inc LS1/2/3/7.]
Saying the LS1 is unreliable??? based on???? The 240/250kw VY series 1 onwards are no problems at all !? No they don't burn oil , shit main bearings / gudgeons or any of the other RUMOURS you may have heard which may apply to VT-VX/VU only. At 120km they will return under 10lt/100km with 3.46 gearing too!!!
Gos ... you will find the older iron block 350's make a LOT more torque lower in the rpm range than the LS-1 (nothing really happens till after 4000rpm) .. Then they turn into fire breathing animals

Bottom end can be significantly improved with a decent set of 1 5/8" TRI-Y extractors and if needs be a COME St-1 cam upgrade.
A better motor given the weight if you can find one for the right price is the LS2 6.0 L98 engine ... these things HAUL ASS from low down in the RPM range and pull like a 14 year old all the way to redline
IMO the cheapest/most effective way would prob be to run a 383/400ci small block[iron] ie from Amcap/Goodwrench (crate motor)
If too much barely makes the grade simply add a Powerdyne or similar huffer kit with intercooler (plenty room in an XJS)
worth a look..

I would love the LS2, but the rego laws down here limit me to only a 10% increase over the orginal engine fitted to this model. In the case of the V12, which is a 5.3 litre - I can *just* squeeze a 5.7 litre in, as it falls slightly under the 10% limit. A 6.0 litre motor will put me over - and no engineering certificate

Apparently a lot of the rattles from the earlier LS1's are piston-slap. The more I troll the GMH / LS1 forums, the more info that is slowly coming to the surface....I am looking at buying a crate LS1 - there are still a few available for the VZ....
The old small-block Chev's are strong, but I really don't want a 20th century motor - they make great HP, but they are dinosaurs compared to the current alloy V8's, which are good for 250kW + in basically stock condition. Plus the fact that I can get parts *anywhere* if needed, and for the purposes I have in mind - a nice stock V8 that is good for cruising and towing is all I am looking for.....

Funny enough when looking up pics of one of my old cars, i came across someone with similar aspirations to yourself, although he had a significantly different goal to that of yourself. And just like yours
i want to see this guys finished product as well. (
Morris 1100 with modern coil overs fitted and a turbocharged 1.3 starlet motor!).

Update 4 July - collected the beast from Oakville today. Had a great trip up with ProblemChild. The bloke who was selling the car had some pretty awesome custom trucks that he builds from a big shed.
In the flesh - well it was in better nick than he had described. The couple of dings are really quite small and should be easily fixed. There could be a bit of putty in a few spots - the fridge magnet test in the morning will reveal all !!
Interior is in great nick considering its age (12/82 build date). Will need a bit of sprucing up, but not heaps. First thing will be a good music system....

. I will drop a battery into the engine bay tomorrow, and check out the electrics - apparently *everything* works 100% ??
Will update this thread as development continues.......having a look at a donor motor/trans tomorrow, got a lead on a VZ LS1 with a 4-speed auto - <50k on the clock !!

and its local ....
Big thanks to PC for helping out on the pick-up today, and also to MadKaw for coffee, and it was good to catch up with the Windsor Mafia, even if it was only for a short while.......Wattie hurry up and get a bike ya big softcock !!!!

Gave it a good wash and a polish today ...

, geez it came up a treat !!
Went and had a look at the engine & box today - all good. Did a deal with the owner, he is dropping it out of his car this week, and I will be collecting it next weekend. VZ LS1, with a VY throttle body (cable operation). VY 4-speed auto. All electrics included, wiring harness and ECU. I will have to buy a new starter motor though.....and some nice HSV covers for the cylinder heads....
The conversion kit will also be ordered this week. It should be here inside the next 2 weeks. PC and I have a bit of work to do on the engine bay now, to prepare it for painting.......

Cant tell from the photo to well but the lower doors and sill look a bit how do ya do, good spot to run over with that magnet
You plan on keeping those wheels on it?

Nice starter pics there. i can see the slight rippling in the bottom sill of the doors now you mention it, i wouldn't have picked it up in the pictures if you hadn't mentioned it to be honest.
And for the fun of it, i got sent
this link tonight and have been reading through it for over an hour or so now. It only just occurred to me two minutes ago how you might want to read through it to see what blind ambition, a lucky acquisition and a arseload of patience will get you.

Gos, you will need to have the ECU modified to bypass the immobiliser ...or it will never run

...

cheers - the guy from the US supplies a by-pass with his kit. Its one of those 'little' things that should make the whole conversion a bit easier.....its some sort of plug-in thingy to the ECU, so that the engine can run OK. He also supplies instructions on how to use the VATS system as well, so I can actually use the immobiliser for security......
