My only problem is keeping the old man off my bike, " No dad you can't take the duke around the block without a license, you can take the missus EL250

". I have a daughter of license age and my only rule is that she gets her car license for a year or two before having a bike, but even so if she really wanted to get a bike she would get one. When the kids both get bikes all I can do is teach them to be as safe as possible.
OP some advanced rider training is recommended and may reduce your parents fears.

Or tell them you'd be much safer if it wasn't for all the bloody cars on the road!

I get really surprised with the stories about being 'disowned' etc

I can't beieve that parents would get so emotional about it !
My young fellah got his first Kawasaki at age 2 !! (nevermind the fact that it was a tricycle, and he couldn't actually ride it until he was 3 1/2 !! )
When he turned 7 I got him one of those ebay 50cc GP bikes - a Kawasaki of course....he rides it around the backyard every now and then....I am hoping that by the time he turns 15, I will have gotten motorcycles out of his system !!!!

I got my bike at age 30-something and my mum wouldn't talk to me for weeks.
After a couple of weeks she started to ask questions about the bike, about my gear. Found out my dad was a rider once upon a time and she pillioned a few times before he had a big off and said "no more". I suppose it helped that I was "mature"*koff *koff* with no prangs in my cars, a clean licence and a lack of the lead foot gene apparent in my other siblings that helped her get used to the idea.
These days (a few years later) mum will be 76 in april and is looking forward to her Harley ride she got for Xmas.

just buy it and bring it home

they might just get over it. Could also tell them that you want to spend the money on a motorbike and not elicit drugs like other young people

My mate got his licence, bought his first bike and rode it around to show his parents a couple of weeks later........his mum burst into tears the moment she saw the bike!

She's gotten use to the idea now tho and just says the usual "be careful you 2!" when we talk about bikes around her.

What a cultural difference ! I loved my bicycle and dad used to keep insisting me to learn motorcycle (and driving cars). He said a man should be able to ride and drive (how true). This is about 18 yrs old. His reasoning was if I did not learn from him, I would have learnt from friends .. and that's dangerous (true too, I think). Where I lived *everyone* rides motorcyles.
So in the future when my kids want to get a bike I'd say... let's go to Phillip Island son
ps. Easy for me to say considering the circumstances, but family should come first. You can always get a bike later on in life. It's not a pressing matter

My Old Man And Lady both used to ride, The old mans got about 8 or 9 bikes in the garage from dukes to guzzis and bmw's - No Jap bikes!
They didnt want me getting one but knew i was going to anyway and that it was pretty hypocritical, so i bought one and they accepted it!

i didnt tell my parents when i got my yz dirt bike a couple of years ago and they were in there words dissapointed with me. but after a while they learnt that i was having fun on it with mates and could see where my money was going instead of all on alcohol, parents grew to deal with it. ok some might say its only a dirtbike not road no chance of getting hit by cars. true. but in august last year i decided to finally buy a road bike, i put a depo down on a brand new green ninja 250. i didnt tell my parents cause they'd of told me to get rid of it. mum only found out cos she saw my credit card bill and an amount from a bikeshop. she was in denial and disappointed again. the old man found out on the day i bought a new toy when i told him iwas picking up a scooter cause i was scared of him. He seen it at midnight and never told him the next day. He spoke to me couple of days later and was expecting the worst but he told me he loved it. So my story is basically the same as yours sometimes you just gotta take a leap of faith if you dont do it now time will fly right past and you'd of never done it and theres a good chance you'll be kicking yourself and regretting it when your 40.

When my dad first came to Australia he rode a YZ80 all the way from Brisbane to Rockhampton - just as he reached the bustling CBD of Rocky he got hit by a ute and did a superman over the bonnet. He still didn't care when I got a bike

Just occured to me.... Maybe buy a scooter first! Everyone loves them harmless cuties transport
Then once the parents get used to it and the L plate passes, trade it with a ZX10R

Yeah my folks weren't too cool about it! I was 18-19 when i jumped on one for the first time, and i was all proud about it and came home and mum tore my head off!
I would jump on the boys moto-x bikes and just not tell em, but whenever they found out it was world war 3 at the smith house hold.
Moved to adelaide and met neka and being 24 mum reeeeeeally couldn't yell at me, but she made it known she was NO FAN of the zthou!!! But i was and dad well he was just happy i was happy so he reckons.... Then i got my licence and told them when they were drunk in the states at my sisters wedding.... Mind u i first said the course was about learning to be a better pillion AHAHAHAH then added oh and i've learnt to ride! Dad was over the moon mum just laughed... Then realised i was serious.
Now she doesnt care well does, but is just happy i've found something i like doing
Ur folks only care mate! Its upto you how u want to play it out... One of my friends actually took her mum along to the learners course so she could see and be apart of the experience... Dunno if it will work for u, but i reckon if u can show ur folks that ur a responsible rider they may come around to the idea like mine did
Ur in adelaide so u got us to ride with too when u finally get ur bike!!!!
