We have to have do both Basic First Aid & CPR Courses for Work but they wouldnt show us that Mick, but i'd be interested to read the procedure.

We were told to leave the helmet on if there was any risk of head/spinal injury. Just pull the visor off to reduce patient panicking and feeling claustrophobic. If they have vomit or blood in their throat that is blocking breathing, you have to remove the helmet - whatever the risk to their neck/spine.

ditto .. weren't shown any methods for removing the helmet if it came to that.

Yeah, that's what they normally stick to, but we conned him into it. You need at least a couple of people, one gently pulling the helmet off, the other using their spread fingers to support the head and neck by slowly wriggling them under the helmet as it comes off. It's a bit hard to describe, you really need to see it. The main thing was that if there was a spinal injury, keeping slight tension on the neck wasn't going to be too bad, the main thing was to stop it rocking forwards or back etc.

I really don't want to be in the situation to have to do it, and I reckon it would have to be a last resort

Before we started doing laps in Germany, the first thing they taught us was how to remove a helmet if someone came off...... Funny way to start an event like that. Really boosts your confidence.

Basic rule of thumb is.. if the person is unconcious, helmet comes off. How you gonna do mouth to mout with it on?

The safest way to get the helmet off is as Mick describes. Basically:
One person kneels behind the persons head and undoes the helmet. They then slowly remove the helmet.
Another person kneels beside the person with their knees pointing up towards the persons chin. Hands are placed either side of the victims neck and slowly wiggled up as the helmet comes off, supporting the head the entire time.

Considering how many people ride bikes, and the number of people who don't know how to do this, if you find someone who knows how to do it, have them show you. It could save someones life.
