one is a clean source of regulated supply powered by your bike, and not subject to random spikes and surges through the electricity grid .....

the other is a 12v source, powered via 240v supplied from the electricity grid, which is subject to random spikes and voltage surges. It is not a 'clean' source of regulated supply. The reduction in charging voltage as the battery charges up is *not* surge or spike protection.

Its as simple as that.

This whole issue is about protecting the costly ECU on your bike, if you want to risk frying everything by hooking up a charger directly to your terminals and leave all other electrical connections alone, then *knock yourself out mate*. It only takes 15 seconds to undo the earth terminal

Solar trickle chargers are another kettle of fish altogether........these can be hooked up directly to your battery terminals for charging your bike if it is not used that often..........and the simple reason is that they are also not powered by 240v mains......

That's why never use unregulated supply :D ... a $15 investmenet of dick smith charger regulator is good  ... It cuts anything above 13.8v :P

15 seconds to unearth? Not on a ZX6R

I have never even *looked* at the battery on the 12.....

anyone know if these are sealed maintenance-free types ??

Yes Gos they are a sealed type and you can charge them still connected the same as your bike does :) as your alternator is likely be more spikey than a stand alone regulated charger

Yeah thats what i thought too.Not that i use a battery charger very often as i ride my bike regulary,so no need to top up the battery, but when i have i have never disconnected it and NEVER had a prob, and i have had plenty of bikes with ECUs.

Ok i stand corrected
I looked this up in the kawasaki manual and it says to refresh the charge in the battery,to disconnect the battery 1st before recharging and to disconnect the earth (-ve) side 1st.

thanks for having the decency to post this correction.

If people out there who know SFA about m/cycles start spouting shit about things that some of us  have been dealing with since years before they were even a glint in their old mans eyes  , then I can *guarantee* that will elicit a response, if only to point you in the right direction. :? Uneducated opinions are about as useful as a Fairyblade on a twisty road

This whole thing has been about trying to assist a fellow member get his electrical issues sorted, as safely as possible. Mainly so that no *uneccesary* costs are incurred. Thats it......

- that sounds like a typical *Honda* regulator mate. BTW have you checked *your* manual about correct charging techniques  since when was your alternator hooked up to 240v mains power when you have been riding it ??

If you knew 2/5ths of 5/8ths of fuck all about Kwakka's, you would know that disconnecting the battery is a recommended procedure. Not just *my* opinion..........

Thanks Gos, I will now go and burn my Bachelor of Electronics Engineering Degree, I may only now 2/5ths of fuck all about Kawasaki's, but I do know some things about electrical stuff  All good fun though

Burn that Degree, it has taught you nothing !!!

anyway, back on topic, I would like to know if Stereo has fixed the problem that kicked this thread off in the first place. While we have been wasting precious bandwidth with pointless argy-bargy, he has probably gone and had the whole thing sorted out .........
