My clutch is waaaaaay too crap to do any wheelie-goodness anymore.
*sigh*
9000rpm launch - slip slip slip slip slip slip slip
*repeat for about 10 seconds*
then finally it grabs

No front lifting action for me.

besides stacking, wheelies can do damage to:
fork seals
happens pretty frequently if you do a lot of them, roadie seals aren't made to cop that sort of abuse
headset bearings
not as common, but still happens. again, the bikes just not built to take that kind of stress
chain
just on power, not really a problem. but the on/off/on method will kill the chain pretty quick and clutching isn't so healthy either
gearbox
changing gears while in the air is the problem here. know anyone with a stuffed second gear? most likely from wheelies
motor
the big one. your oil pickup is usually at the centre of the sump, so when you're right up at BP the oil may not be covering the pickup so air is being pumped through instead. do this for long enuff and... well you know what happens when your top end has no oil

i know someone thats gone through 2 GSXR1000 motors because of this (good reason not to buy a suzuki

)
oh, and i cant wheelie

wish i could say its because of all the above, but nar, i'm just a blouse

the 7 will do it, and fairly easily, but i'm a wuss

My baby is due a service (18000KM) AND i NEED NEW HEAD BEARINGS, CHAIN, SPROCKETS. Might reconsider the idea that every set of lights is a chance to hoist the front
Maybe I am getting soft.
Might need a Honda Firestorm.

yeah i failed to mention that i'm not particularly good at wheelies. i do the on/off/on trick in first, loft it and hold it through first then put it down. impressive huh

I wish i could do wheelies
I guess i could learn but i dont really want to drop my bike.
There is a little place on my way home from work where the road drops away (down a hill) real quick.
i like to gun it there in first and i can usually get the wheel about a foot off the ground for a few metres.
it would be awesome to be able to overtake your mates - put it on the back wheel - give them the finger onthe way by and leave them for dust

One of the best I ever saw was a guy with the front hovering about 40 - 50cm above the deck for about 7-800metres. It's not at the balance point, so it must all be power (and a solid clutch!). The other was on a Fast Bikes' vid, where 2 of them dusted a Ferrari doing stand-up wheelies with one leg crossed over the side

. Stick that up yr V8 quadcam, blah blah

dude you will be fine if u start small and work your way up, i dunno how easy a Z750 wheelies but im sure it can do so alright off the throttle
heres a vid worth watching on learning to wheelie

thanks for the link mitch
ive actually seen that vid before.
I try to keep what he says in mind when i do try them - but i only try them rarely.
I reckon if i just took the time to find a nice quiet spot and just practiced it i would figure it out soon enough...
maybe tmw...

mitch179 wrote:imo, i dont land them any harder than say hitting a decent sized bump in the road so i dont really think im putting excess amounts of strain on the front end but oh well!
i agree that it would be putting a fair bit of extra stress on the chain and sprockets tho
but its ohh so damn fun, i would like to learn to clutch up second but i would end up going to fast and probably scare the shit out of myself

The 03/04 636 with minimal fuel in the tank (approx 1/3 tank) @160kph in 5th gear is capable of doing bounce-up/clutch-up standup wheelies, I know a guy who know's a guy that has tried & succeeded....
At the easter weekend 1/8th mile drags, I managed somewhere around 7.60@96mph on the back wheel, I didnt expect the track to be so grippy & when I let the clutch out off the line it went straight up, so I went with it, Was cool fun & I didnt get in trouble either.
The 636 is a very easy to wheelie bike & another thing I have been told is excessive hard landings wreck fork bushes as well which then wreck fork seals, head set bearings & chains & sprockets if clutching up.
If you get too worried about damaging stuff from having fun, it maybe better to get another older bike & thrash that instead.

Learned to wheelie on a RD350 flipped it

scared shitless for the next 5yrs.
Re-learned it again on a GSX1100R WP went over balancing point slammed the rear brake

front landed busted fork-seals and slighty dented front wheel.
Did normal 3rd gear wheelies on my CB1000 got caught by a traffic cop

luckily he was a friend of mine licence safe
Wheelied on the CBR929 with girlfriend on board ,into second gear changing into third hit a small bump

nearly flipped again but managed to land it rough, got a good screamin of vulgarities by her for the next 15KM home
On the ZX9RB1 wheelied it till the clutch basket busted

pieces of it went into the crankshaft, major overhaul and major $$$
I had the wheelie-bug too but now doin it lesser,do it as safe as possible people
