For what it's worth,
here is an indication that Rudd is just a little tax happy at the moment.

I think we can start to target the "fat people"
Macdonalds will come in plain wrappers with disgusting fat pictures (sorry warnings)

KFC will only be allowed to be consumed in designated areas for the fear that slim people may be upset by the disgusting aroma.
Where does it end
Obesity-related illness killed 5,600 people across Australia every year and governments should do more to cut the toll, health groups say.
Diabetes Australia, the Heart Foundation and the Cancer Council have joined forces to call on the Victorian state government to take urgent action to address the problem.
Director of the Victorian branch of the Cancer Council Professor David Hill, said at least 1,400 Victorians died each year from obesity-related disease.
"Four Victorians die every day from cardiovascular disease, type two diabetes and cancer, related to being overweight or obese," Dr Hill said.
"These statistics show just how urgent the need for action is."
Victorian Burden of Disease statistics show that in 2002, 650 overweight or obese people died from cardiovascular disease, 450 from type two diabetes and 300 from cancer.
I think you make a really fair point. Now clearly smoking ain't good for you and we should be doing whatever we can to discourage it. What shit's me though is that we've made smokers the pariahs of society for years now, the economic argument being that all of the other taxpayers have to pay for their hospital treatments when they get older. This is a load of shit as they die earlier anyway so what you spend in hospital fees you save in social security/pension payments.
Now just imagine that the same campaigns run to discourage smoking ( ie smoking is anti social) were run to discourage obesity. We'd all then be accused of being bigotted and discriminatory. Imagine if Macca's, KFC, Pizza Hut were all made to lose their brand identity, you don't think that would cost the Gov some serious money in damages for loss of intellectual property. IP lawyers are gonna love it if they try and stop them branding Ciggies. I hope K Rudd got some deep pockets to pay fo the loss of branding etc because it will run into the billions
By all means tax the bejeezus out of them but why not do the same for all the fat shit that people throw down their throat. There's a hell of a lot of stones being thrown around glass houses I reckon

Not arguing the point, but I'm always sceptical when I read statistics like these as it is never, ever that cut and dried. The obvious omission is how many of these overweight people who died from cardiovascular disease, type two diabetes and cancer were also smokers. What about other factors?
And although I said I wasn't arguing the point, there is the argument that anyone who smokes is increasing their risk of disease, whereas there's a fair percentage of people who can eat junk food without becoming obese or increasing their risk of disease. This doesn't include people who eat deep-fried mars bars though

....and it doesn't justify the targetted actions against smokers that we've seen either, but unfortunately politicians love a good bandwagon.
