Out of intrest why does it worry you if someone dosent have full comprehensive? Just cause they dont have their own property insured, as long as they have 3rd party property which covers other peoples vehicle/property in an accident then it doesnt make any difference to you what so ever?

It they have no 3rd party property I understand your worry there though.

   you know me mate, I would just charm my way out of it....... - but seriously - without me having insurance, the best she could hope for is a $20/week commitment from me as the 'at fault' rider - I can live with that. Same thing would happen if I damaged anyone else's property.....happy to pay the damage if I am at fault - but as a family guy with limited income and 4 kids - well any court out there is going to accept a payment plan from me for the damages bill........no matter how large it is.

The thing with all these *worst case* scenarios - and lets be honest, that is what insurance is *all* about - is that in riding on the roads for >30 years now, often with a wicked demenour  - I am yet to owe a cent to anyone for damage caused by me. Of course, I hear people say - ' but it could happen tomorrow' - well yes it 'could' I suppose - but my logic suggests to me that if I have managed to avoid slamming any motorcycle into someone elses Mercedes Coupe for the last 30 years, I am in a pretty good position to continue this trend...... :kuda:

I have to say though, that insurance did save me some money once. I had income protection insurance for a personal loan - and got pretty sick once, lost my job, and the income insurance covered the loan payments until I have a new job. This is the *only* time I have ever benefitted from having insurance - and it had nothing to do with driving !!

Personally, I reckon anyone living in the Sydney basin is better off with insurance for theft !!

Just gotta wonder at the mentality of someone that steals an Aston and drives it a couple of blocks and then leave it. The penalty would be the same if one took it for a flog on a section of twisties first.

Maybe she couldn't afford to put much petrol in it and they were afraid to fill up. :?

I've been riding for 27 years now and if I'd been fully comprehensively insured all that time I probably couldn't afford to have the 2 bikes that I own today (because insurance is so dam expensive). I've had a couple minor skiddles (or drops on the driveway) and the costs of repair have always been small.
What I did learn long ago is to keep the bike in good serviceable state and handling well; soft sticky rubber, always keep brakes in excellent condition and make sure that the suspension is in good nick and appropriately set-up for the ride.
Last time I checked on an insurance quote for my Bird some years ago, I was quoted $1,800  . There's no chance I'm going to pay that, in 10 years of insurance payments I can have myself a new bike and still get back half what I paid for the first one :D .
And if anyone doesn't want to ride with me for that reason, I wouldn't care less  8) .......... they would probably learn a thing or two if they did :kuda:

csgup1, you must be from Melbourne....... too many Ferrari's. In Brisbane, people drive in falcons, commodores and other alike.
Couldn't help myself, left yourself wide open :). You're right 3rd party insurance does make some sense. :kuda:

Pinchy...Mate.....Noice way to start of 2010!!! But, I doubt I have ever claimed to be fast. I just ride, at my own pace and enjoy! It's got nothing to do with being quicker than the next guy or girl and all to do with enjoying the feeling, that cranking a bike over on it's side through a turn, gives me each and every time. :D On group rides, I always ride at my own pace. If others choose not to do so, I cannot be held responsible for their actions. I am not the one twisting the throttle and steering the bike. I'm too busy twisting and steering mine! If someone crashes because they are trying to keep up with someone else, then they should shoulder 100% of the responsibilty. We cannot choose how others ride, but we CAN choose how we ride! ;)

As for you Seiko, that's the exact reason why people do crash. They get there ambitions mixed up with their abilities. They make the bike go faster than their brain can handle. A crash sometimes being the result! There are loads of guys who can pass me on the road at will. When they do, I usually have big grin in my lid. It's great to see someone steer a bike with some err ....gusto!  But try and chase them...naah! I'd start getting ragged and that's when mistakes happen. So, I just enjoy what I am doing, at my pace and watch them dissapear in the distance. It's especially fun when there is a gaggle of a few riders. Black lines are fun to follow! I still giggle when I see them!!

The club I ride with here in Vic occassionally has a rider go down. It's the same thing everytime almost. Into the corner faster than they have been, panick, then either lock the front or stand it up on the brakes and run wide. I reckon of 100 bike crashes I have seen, 70+% would have been running wide. The other 20% were mostly bikes hitting other bikes. Another common accident on a group ride. With the remaining being loose surfaces....gravel, snow, Ice, Oil, Diesel or petrol.

As for insurance. Some guys I ride with are insured, others arn't. I just don't ride close to those who I don't trust as riders. It's easy to find out who's who. Just crank the pace a little and see what happens. You'll soon enough know who the idiots are!!!

I wasn't saying you bait anyone mate, just commenting on your gift of the gab... I know you never chase anyone, you're always towards the front anyways haha pushing your limits is how you get better but it needs to be in small steps, not large ones... I know this first hand from the CDT last year

If ya want to draft people down the straights, show them a wheel through the corners and generally ride in close proximity to other riders - DO A TRACK DAY.

If you want to do Mach 3 down the straights then grab a shit load of brakes into the Apex - DO A TRACK DAY

On the road keep a sensible distance from other bikes, ride at the pace with little brakes and if you are not insured (or can not afford to repair my bike) understand that my fully comprehensive insurance company will chase you for every cent should the need arise.
