Just got one of these and slotted a 500Gb hard drive in to it... records AV in so I can record Foxtel, Streams from the PC to the TV wirelessly ( if you use a USB wireless adaptor in the back) really well and has a HD TV recorder built in.
Cost me under $300 from MSY

Ratmick wrote:Hi all,

My venerable 29" Toshiba CRT stereo TV died in the arse today, indications are it's the yoke (research indicates it to be a common problem with this model). Given its age (approx 7-8 years) it's probably curtains for this particular unit. The kids' mum has a 90cm LCD Panasonic which they love and they naturally are delighted with this development and are shopping for a 40-46" LCD/Plasma/LED TV (pity they're not paying for it).

Does anyone have any insights they feel that I should know about before I hand over a significant wad of cash (ok, credit or interest-free) for a new unit?

Space isn't a problem, the family room is huge. The current TV unit that house the Toshiba is approx 1.8m across will be relocated to the lounge.

Distance to the screen is between 2 and 3 metres, depending on where the couch ends up being pushed to by the kids.

Please note I can't afford to donate a kidney (my partner has first dibs on mine anyway).

Many thanks, Mick
I can get you heavily discounted Toshiba LCD tv from work listed as Refurbs under half price, shoot me a PM

Gos, re pvr's I just bought a Beyonwiz lite, 500Gb HD twin tuners from JN hi Fi for $500, love it, BUT, I am having trouble getting it to recognise a USB HDD so might even pay to look at other o[ptions, fwiw if recording in HD then I think a 500Gb hd should be minimum as it fills damn quickly.

I got my Tivo for $650 and based in the lounge room on the main tv but can network it on any tv in the house...

Sorry wasn't knocking what u got at all... ;)
I'd say being USB and 500GB its going to need its own power source, is the HDD in its own case? like a PC back up HDD?

r.e. PVR's i put one together with mythtv. Specifically i used the mythdora 10 distribution. I based it around a 750gb drive and a E2140 cpu (its an older generation dual core, but has plenty of grunt for the job) and used 3x dvico HD tuner pci cards as well as 4 usb tuner dongles.

Once i got it together (this is my second mythdora build and replaced a mythdora 5 p4 2.8 based system) and got the bugs out of the new build it has been rock solid. For the do it yourself person with a good linux aptitude, or someone willing to learn it can be worthwhile putting together. Certainly not something recommended for the weak of heart or short of patience.
