When I was photographing bands in London I tried listening to music on the ride home ONCE. I had been at a fairly loud gig (Read farkin LOUD), and was riding through mainly deserted main roads through the south east suberbs an some time after 2am (Waterloo Bridge - Elephant & Castle - A2 to Greenwich - M2 into Kent for those in the know).

I choose Judas Priest's Painkiller and set off on my way home. Now, as I grew up on dirt bikes with no clocks, I tend to change gear by listening to the engine. In normal circumstances this is perfectly acceptable, and on my FZ750 I could ride at the right speed limit by knowing what gear and revs I was at.

However, somewhere along the A2 (Camberwell I think) I looked at the speedo! It seems that abusing your hearing at a heavy metal concert, then plugging into a personal stereo reduced your ability to hear the engine. Assuming you click through the gears when you do hear the engine, means you attain a fair pace

I have never ridden with loud music again.

I have however ridden with music turned down a bit, on a long journey, just to relieve the boredom.

For commuting: Korn, tool, NIN and Crystal Method, RATM
For long rides/recreational: Crystal Method (still good!), jameroquai, some of the chill dj mixes that come out periodically, particularly Armin Van Beurin, foo fighters, Sash! Tupaq, eminem (hey 3 years ago i woulda bitchslapped myself for that), Snoopdog.

personally not been too fussed on the pitch'n tones of the fire breather... as long as it does it's job like the rest of the machine.. function over form for me..

as for the museeq... it keeps me occupied, as i'm worse when bored

as your own 'experiment' (on a back road if need be..) block your ears and see what you do and how you react (vision)

rhythm has an effect on the human psych & physic in turn... and eventually the rhythm is gonna get you

That's a farkin big call. There are some shit hot riders in this place, and I doubt many (if any) of the good ones will tell you they can ride their bike to it's full capability.

I'm not basing my comments on assumptions. I did one 1 1/2 hour leg of my motogp trip last year wearing an ipod (metalica and iron maiden) and after about an hour, was ready to rip the whole thing out and chuck it. For the rest of the trip (5500km round trip) it was ear plugs only. Like I have said, I'm sorry if my initial post came across to you as a rant, or if it upset you. However I don't put forward an opinion unless I have had some experience in the subject.

I read my reply again, and now see what you may have read into it

my response was anwering to the call of being a 600 ri-der ... and what gains can be achieved by 'exhausting' them...
i also do agree that whatever bike we have, can always be ridden better. In all honesty i've always believed that the extent of potential will never be found in any bike with any rider.

The Genre may not be my style but I'm with you on the singing bit Gig.
I reckon singing in a helmet on a long ride is better than in the shower as no one can here how bad I am ------- not even me !!!
(Blackbetty amongst others when I'm about to get an attack of 'redmistosis' , a few of the Dire Straits classics for a mellow kinda ride ie with newbies etc... )
