Well..
I had 21 when I moved to NSW. I lost all them when transferring my license and avoided losing it too!
I now have 3 and I'd like to keep it that way.

I looked into it a bit further and found this.....
Demerit points and licence suspensions
The law requires the RTA to send a notice of suspension to a licence holder who has incurred 12 or more demerit points in any three-year period.

The law permits the counting of demerit points for offences of any age but suspension can only be applied if the dates the offences were committed are within 3 years of each other.

However, the RTA considers it would be unreasonable to consider offences more than 40 months. The 40-month period exists to ensure that delays between an infringement taking place and the RTA being notified of the infringement are taken into account and ensures that only recent and relevant offences are counted.

For this reason, demerit points up to 40 months old are displayed on the RTA’s online demerit point enquiry screen, because these offences have the potential to count towards a demerit point licence suspension.

Demerit points used towards a licence suspension can’t be counted towards future licence suspensions.

Note: Offences and the relevant number of demerit points remain on a person’s driving record irrespective of the age of the offence. If you obtain a copy of your driving record, all your offences and demerit points will be displayed because this accurately reflects your driving history.
So if it's 40 months thats 3 years & 4 months, NOT the 3 years that everyone seems to think it is, am I reading that correct?
No points only apply for 3 years
They use the 4 months lag to keep their database flush..

I haven't lost a point (touch wood) in 12 years (krist only knows how), so I'm a zero too.

Thats fine Hoff, but it's been 3 years, 2months & 10 days ( I just checked the the fine sheet )since that first 3 point fine and it still shows that I have 6 demit points against me instead of 3.

Man, what a pain in the butt, i can see why you care, your in that "4 month window" right now.

Personally im at 0 points, but only because i finally accumulated a total of 12 when i got that 30-45'er a couple of years back (and i hate to say it, but it's made me more of a pussy on the roads, still! :-( ) and had served my good behaviour without incident.

well i lost 4 on my P's, so lost my P's, then got an excessive speeding ticket so lost 4 again and lost it for 3 months instantly and now lost 13 and on 1 pt for another 3 months!

so for me = 21pts in total over 5 years, which makes me a menace on the road, :kuda:
