Personally I am union member, LMHU or some such shit, fairly large union albeit one with very tiny balls. The real prob as I see it with unions as you can be in a job where if you go out on strike people feel massive pain, see doctors, nurses, posties for examples. This then gives the union a bit more punch so to speak and in the case of the BLF way way back flexed their muscle regularly and literally to the point the union was disbanded by Govt.

I'm a member as I believe they have a spot in the workplace and besides, what I pay to the union can be claimed back on tax anyways

I was a union member in two of my previous jobs. 1 'expected' it, the other didn't. I was not a member to get one over on an employer or any big business worker vs management reasons. The reality was that both sites had aspects that were inherently dangerous and as admin staff we were often at risk (Stock checks in the warehouse etc). Having the union backing meant cover in the event of injury. Worth a small fee to protect your lively hood - one guy on our team lost three toes getting run over by a forklift, the union made sure he got decent compo and that his family didn't starve in the time it took to get the compo.

Unions are only as strong as their members allow them to be.
Usual anti union bullshit flying around...........don't want to join one but are more than happy to take the benefits that were negotiated (38 Hr working week, paid holidays, sick pay etc.)

l put unions in the same class as religion, l can understand the fundamental reasons behind it but dont like the way it is run. Yes they do good work but l have seen a lot of the bad side to not like them enough.

So we have unionism to thank for the 38 hour week etc. Thank you unions. Now get over it.
I have never been in a union.
a) I remember when friends and relos were told they couldn't come to work because their union was supporting some strike down the road - usually because they'd sacked some slacko who wouldn't work in a barrel of yeast. I couldn't understand the notion of paying good money to someone so they could tell you when you could go to work, even if you had no gripe in your workplace.
b) I worked in primary industry and have always been lucky enough to have bosses that I could wrap around my little finger.
c) The job I have now I do for free. If I don't like the conditions I don't have to go.

Warehouse I was in had 72 loading docks, up to 100 pickers each driving like loons on 1tonne rollatrucks and a whole bunch of brainless fools on reach-trucks also driving like loons. These are all battery powered and are on slick tyres on smooth concrete (so quiet). They had habbits of swinging around blind corners at mach3, with little or no concern for anyone in the way.

BOC was more concerned with compressed gas, and even produced Acetylene on site. Imagine a forkie driving along with 90 cubic metres of Hydrogen compressed into 8 cylinders on his tynes - would make anyone want some level of cover!
