Well seeing as you asked...(?)...
The test involved people being asked to watch a clock hand moving around a clock and to choose a number where they'd like to stop it, and then click the mouse to stop the clock. The other half of the test was they were to click the mouse in response to something like a red dot showing up (or something like that)...
The people were hooked up to ECG machines and the brain activity was measured - for the conscious decision, the brain activity kicked of an average of 2 seconds before the resulting action. The reactive test showed much less time between recognition of the stimulus and the resulting action.

I'm not convinced that you can learn to ride faster by riding slower....

Well it is at this point the Zen teacher would whack you over the head...
You need to get the physical and mental discipline happening first.
But obviously at some point you will need to actually practise riding with the throttle open too...

i agree with that. the first tim e i jumped on a road bike i thought 40 was around 80, after a few seconds ur body adjusts. same with taking corners slow, ur learn and ur body adjusts.
for example evreybody can do things faster than when they firsted started riding.
unless ur neka, u go fast when u start and have to slow down cos u crash alot.

Jase
i wanna disagree
I think you can...
go back to some of the posts about your police course
slow cornering scraping the pegs gives confidence about doing the same at higher speeds (or trying to do it)
that old adage about the bike outleaning the rider....
cheers

You've actually just proved my point. Go sit in the corner and think about what you've done, then go read the very top bit of my post (the bit in-between the '##')
Fundamentals people, how often they get overlooked...

Yup, there is a really good reason they do this, and it is not because they want to have the best slow speed riders in the police force. They are training your motor skills (and I mean 'motor' as in 'motor neuron' people) and your subconscious without you even knowing it.
I bet they started out with this slow speed stuff, eh? And for most people they would be unfamiliar with the bike being used on the course? Re-read my first post and see if you still disagree...
Ok, I've
really nerded this up enough...I'll just exit quietly...

...
you either do it that way.... or take years of near misses and oops
to learn to do it proper...

Sorry Ian, still don't agree. The only way you can learn to ride faster, is to ride faster. If you continue to ride slow, then you are a slow rider. Still not following?
OK, try this. If you take a particular corner at 50km/h, and decide that you are happy with that, then you will always take it at 50. But, if you want to learn to take the corner at 80 km/h, then you need to ride faster than 50 km/h around that corner. You'll never learn to take the corner at 80 by taking it at 30. Hmmm.. think I'm confused now.

i agrees with u there jase, but u have trained urself to take that corner at 50, so to take it at 80 ur just doing what u do at 50 but a bit faster.
i think were all on the same track....
