I'm not saying don't do it...I just don't see the value in it. Who picked 500k's as the scientifically determined change point? Why not 250? 100? Each and every run? Maybe we should go back to the good old days of total loss systems
All motors wear, it is a fact of life. But I still think the engineers determine the best way to maximise the life of the engine, so I'll keep sticking to their recommendations.

Neither do the marketing people, and when they argue, no doubt against the advice of the engineers, that the first service be no sooner than 1,000km because the customer would consider it onerous to return their bike to the shop at the 100km and the 500km mark, they win.

No, it isn't. Those who argue that changing the oil before the 1000km service because the manufacturer says not to bother are wrong, for reasons which have been amply stressed by a number of people.
This isn't politics, it's mechanics. There's a right answer and a wrong answer, and "Manufacturer knows best, so I'll keep doing as they say" is the latter.

It will be fine that motor is fairly understressed

The servicing dept will put synthetic oil in your bike at the first oil change, if the rings arent bedded in by the 1000 k service they arent going to.

I have an open mind, so I'd like to see some proper figures on this. I'd accept any kind of empirical data that shows engine life deteriorating over time depending on when original oil is changed...and then I'll be in a position to determine whether I care
If it is the difference between my engine needing a rebuild in 100,000 km instead of 120,000 km then I don't

well, no they won't. Any dealer that did that to a new motor would be a total prick.
Its not just a matter of the rings bedding in, its the entire motor/gearbox that needs to be considered. The rings are just a small (though important) part of the bigger picture. The gearbox certainly won't have 'bedded-in' by the first service at 1000km.........
I got some advice about my 12 (well after it was needed

), by a bloke who has owned quite a few new bikes over the years......
His advice was - Ride the bike home from the dealer, and *Immediately* dump the original oil and filter, replace with new filter and same oil that dealer will use at first service (1000km).
Ride 3-400km, then dump this oil, and replace as above.
Then take bike into dealer for its *first* service......all the above advice assumes that you intend to keep your new bike for some considerable time, not just until upgrade time, in which case do everything as cheaply as possible........

My dealer would not run full synthetic oil until the 12k service. It was semi-synth up to that point from the 6k service, and full mineral oil for the first 6k. Thats what they did for my 12 in any case.

Semi, it's what they use in 90% of the bikes
