I would go for fixing the existing bike, after shopping around the repair costs. If you fix it, you'll likely recover the costs in sale value when your 12 months are up. Otherwise that bike becomes scrap value to you only.
I've got a ZZR250 and if you are looking at one, they are great learner bikes and easy to ride. They are not very fast though, I think a 2 stroke or a cbr250rr would be more fun despite ther revvy nature. I have been thinking about switching over to an Aprilia rs250, but then I have to think about paying for other recent purchases like new couches, holidays with the other half etc - too expensive!

Lemme guess vic Bike wreckers? Keith is a ripoff frankly, rest of his workers aren't too bad...
Kawachcik, if you DO decide to get another 250 DON'T go to Sumoto!!! I'm not mechanically clued up ewnough to advise whether it's worth fixing or not but if you want a cheap mechanic to look at it pm me and i'll hit you with the name of a backyard mechanic I know that really knows his shit as a few here can attest too.

WTF
went to the smashed auctions the other day
300K old GPX with smashed ducktail and minor LHS scratches, broken LH clipon and blinker went for $3300
to the OP , fix your bike, find a motor somewhere , visit the auctions the same as i did and find a totalled bike , sell what you dont need on here or ebay
