Why is it you think the only way to reduce the road toll is to control speeding? The point some of us have been making is it would be safe to increase the speed limits and still reduce the road toll if you prevented incompetent drivers from getting a license.
At no point have I claimed that police shouldn't be out there stopping dangerous driving. I would much prefer highway patrol be encouraged to use discretion like the rest of the force does and then concentrate on actions that put other drivers at (real) risk rather than concentrating on a perceived risk that the government has fooled them into believing. Instead they pour a large proportion of their resources into minor offenses that happen tens of thousands of times every day without incident and on their own are statistically insignificant in the road toll. The majority of the population would drive 10 to 15kph over the speed limit every day in some places without incident despite the government officials telling us it is the most dangerous thing you can possibly do. Is this telling us the majority of the population are criminals or that the speed limits in that area are set unrealistically low?

Not so sure about the Ambo's and the City Firey's, but out here in the bush, (Rural Fire Service) we have to obey all the road rules despite being under lights and sirens. We are allowed to go through red lights after stopping and ensuring the intersection is clear, but we will be held accountable if there is an accident.

no thanks seiko1, i'll keep thinking my own thoughts cause it would be a sad state of affairs if we all had to think like one person! one nation! "please explain"

Don't get me wrong, I was only giving a tongue in cheek example of what a probable fix would be for the "problem". I agree with you wholeheartedly. Whats the point in buying a bike or car that has the capacity to do 300kph, if we're not allowed to do it (except on a track, and not everyone has the money/time/access to a track to be able to do that), and why does the government allow the motor companies to continue to sell them if they blame speed for most road fatalities. I also firmly believe that Australia is one of the countries that would benefit the most from something equivalent to the European Autobarns, not reduced speed limits. Our nation is so fricken big with large distances between cities/towns/specks on the map, that a 100kph speed limit is laughable. Our main highways should be made from concrete, not bitumen, as concrete doesn't melt in the hot sun and get all fucked up by traffic, which adds to the problem. Our main roads should be no less than 3 lanes/side. Left lane for the Morgan Freemans and trucks, centre lane for the do gooders who only want to do the ton, and right lane with a greatly increased limit. Something like that anyway. NT used to have the right idea, but they've now succumbed to the popular theory that anyone who speeds WILL kill someone. Suburbia is a different story though. Keep the limits as they are in built up areas. Gotta think of the children. Unfortunately our government thinks in dollars and cents, instead of common sense, so they blame speed on the problem, say we are going too fast and drop limits even more, adding to an already frustrating problem.
I agree about the licence thing too. Getting a licence shouldn't be about being shown how to pass a low speed test, it should be based on being able to competantly pass tests on a skid pan in various conditions at various speeds. In other words, something like a defensive driving course. This should be mandatory, not an option to do AFTER you've been given a licence to kill due to poor or non existant skills. Unfortunately this will never happen. If they stop giving incompetant drivers licences, they reduce their revenue.
I think I'll just keep doing what I do and suffer the fines when they happen.......................because I choose to.

Yes, it would be. That was my point.

One of the basic rules of policing mate. Police the little things to reduce the incidents of the big things occurring. Why do you think they spend so much time and effort policing what is realistically petty street crime such as urinating in a public place, disorderly behaviour, etc?

Thats BS in NSW at least... The rules change but there are still rules to follow. Ive had to justify my actions on an occassion and could do so. No backup from the employer, its up to the each driver to prove their actions would be considered 'reasonable' to a 'reasonable person'. Thus if they want to u can get screwed!

They didnt give a fuck about my 3 thousand dollar guitar, gps unit or breifcase that was stolen a few years back..
When i rang them to report they said 'we will come out'..... They never came out to look, which was surprising as two of my neighbours got broken into on the same night

i ended up going down to castle hill police station to report it to some pleb behind the counter, who clearly didnt give a fuck..
Truly, if you love doing break and enters go for your fucking life as they will not try to catch you, too busy on highway..i might pack in my job and just do break ins, a couple a week should keep me cashed up..
As i have said before, the cops are frightened of real criminals and would rather bust mum and dad for minor speeding offences..
Alot of my customers, the pubs in the cross, have had to employ their own street police supported by council, as the real cops are no where to be seen..
