i used my cbr250 as my sole transport for a while, its not bad at all, just get a wet weather suit (u look like a complete tit in one but meh) they keep u seriously bone dry..

thats down near the E..but the light has not come on
Mine took about 17-18litres for a fill at around 340-350kms
(the tank is 22Litres? from memory)

and a bit more accurate measure.... (I have done this several times)
my place to PI and return is 282 kms
....the GPx took on average about 13.5-14litres to refill every time
the servo is just around the corner, so its accurate

in contrast the 12r never would have made the PI round trip
..it needed a refill at Cranbourne (45ks short of home )
I was watching last trip..coz there is no way I am gunna
push a 12R anywhere

Wattie, I reckon you might struggle on a 250 doing 100km per day commuting........especially when its wet and cold and still 80km to go......

Somebody mentioned a GT550 ? - a cheapie GT550 would be ideal. Still enough mumbo to get moving, very economical, no chain maintenance, and that legendary Big K reliability......

Mate, when petrol hits $2 per litre this Christmas, I will dusting the cobwebs off my postie bike, and riding that to work !!! (With a 28mm flatslide and a hotdog muffler, it will do at least 130kmh !!!)

having a 5 bike garage & doing most of the servicing myself i would have to say that rego is the biggest problem.an old Z or GPZ 750 could also be a good alternative,or even a Z 650.

i drove a 1litre charade for 6 months and loved it, coz i could drive it flat out everywhere and nover get into trouble hehe
im not too scared of the 250, as long as it can hold 120km/hr better than my xr600 used to..

still in the thought stage, as still have a car to sell

Get a KLR

It gives you a shit load more road to use...

Footpaths, median strips, front gardens etc etc.

i used a KLR 250 to commute from cronulla to st leonards (sydney) for 2 years - thats a 100 k round trip.

The thing was rooted when i got it and it still never missed a beat the whole time.

it was extremely mistreated. It got dropped heaps by me and my mates being a goose on it, i rarely serviced it and basically treated it like shit the whole time.

I love that bike every time i see one on the street i get a grin on my face

Except get a full on traily and then Golf Courses, parks and schools become shortcuts...

go a 650 dirtbike.

you can drop it, its economical, good in traffic, reliable, can mount kerbs, cheap road tyres, etc.....

not much goes wrong with 1 piston, and if it does spend the few hundg to fix it.

my recommendation is a gpx250. I use mine to commute and have fun every other weekend. Trip to and from work is 80km roun dtrip and it does it easily. bloody cheap to run. Took it for a run from Toowoomba to Brissy 2 weeks ago. 300km round trip. I filled before I left and when I got back home it took 12L....beat that! Normal commuting and giving it a flogging i average about 250km to 12L.
