Sounds like a wise move.
Are you hell bent one something specifically sporty? If not have you thought of an ER5? It's probably not a bad option and you can do them up a bit.
Good luck with it.

if ur gonna spend $4-$4,500, forget about getting something in good nick.
i sold my zxr250 to a bloke in tassie for $5000 even.
it had a new paint job and tyres, but it was pretty rough around the edges.
i believe the 400s or a bit pricier, but you could get a good deal.
i'd speak to pontikat, he's pretty well versed in the workings of the zxr400.
and it would be a better option.

If weight is the only issue and you can spend a little more cash a zx6r B or C could be the go. A zzr weighs over 200Kg dry while these are in the low 160s.

some food for thought-
a 1998 ZZR600 weighs 195kgs dry and seat height is 78cm
a 1999 ZXR400 weighs 180kgs dry and seat height is 78cm
a 1995 ZX6R weighs 182kgs dry and seat height is 81cm
a 2000 ZX6R weighs 200kgs dry and seat height is 78cm
a 2003 ZX6R weighs 161kgs dry and seat height is 82.5cm
a 1997 ER-5 weighs 174kgs dry and seat height is 78cm
a 2002 ER-5 weighs 179kgs dry and seat height is 78cm
looks like the ER-5 would suit you pretty well from what you've said.

compare a few bikes.
do you're research and shop around. you're needs are more specific than most ppl.

The '95 does indeed weigh 182kg. The '98 weighs 176kg and the '00 171 or 2, I can't remember which.

I reckon a ZXR400 would suit you down to the ground. I haven't ridden one, but I own a similar bike- a CB400 SuperFour import. The 400s from Japan are around 180kg, with 60Hp, also with a very low seat height. The CB is very low, handles well and is fast enough, even with 112kg of me on it. I did 400 odd km on it yesterday.

I really enjoy riding it, and would assume a ZXR to be a bit quicker.

BTW the imports are speed limited to 180km/h (Japanese speed rules) but this is easily bypassed. Haven't had a chance to see how fast it goes but it did do 180 before the limiter was removed. (on a private road of course.)
