Handn't really considered a 9 but was thinking of going for a 750 if one came up. Nice compromise I guess.
Will keep my eye our for them while I'm at it.
Wouldn't insurance be a bit of a jump over a 600??

Pre 00 Bikes I have ridden....
98 GXR600, 98 CBR600F3, 98 Yamaha R6, 99 Kawasaki ZX6R
When I was looking at buying my first 600 (in 2000) I shopped around and test rode the 4 big ones.... a quick review for your benefit here...
The Gixxer was the prefered choice by all of my mates at the time... It was the first bike out of the 4 that I test rode... It is a pretty agressive little beasty, not very nicely finished I personally thought, and it feels really wide. The engine was pretty strong. The particular bike I looked at had a fairly decent dent in the frame so i decided not to buy it...
The ZX6R had a fair bit more power than the Gixxer, it really got up and boogied and most noticably had a much better mid range. The seating was more comfortable than the Gixxer and the instrumentation is easier to read. The finish of the Kwaka was probably the best... The fairings are less flimsy looking. One thing about the ZX was that the engine was a bit noisier.... which is actually normal for Kwakas...
The Yammie was really something else that year, the "new shape" at the time R6 was really narrow compared to the other bikes, I felt very exposed on it. That said, it rode well, the riding position was a little more aggresive than the ZX but less than the GSXR. The R6 had almost no lower to midrange to speak of, but when the power kicked in at high revs it was very fast.... Not rider friendly at all....
The CBR (which i ended up buying) was my pick, slightly more upright riding position than the ZX meaning some would say it was less sporty.... although some will debate that (including me).... I found it to be the most rider-friendly of the lot, it is very forgiving and has a very good midrange... I have to admit that part of reason I bought it was because it already had some stuff done to it (Braided lines, air filter, gold valves in front forks)....
In the end all of these bikes are fantastic..... You just need to find one in good shape.....

Yeah didn't even think of that but a mate told me today. Something I hadn't really considered.
As for the insurance thing I have done a quick check before and while it's an increase it isn't offensive. Still it all adds up to make it a bit more expensive than just the bike price. Plus tyres are considerably more.
All things need to be considered I guess.
I'm up for rego on the gpx this week, so hopefully that will entice any would be buyers.
Just not sure if to sell it now and be without one for a while to help save money (got a car as well) or to hang onto it for a bit and make use of the rego. Can't imagine 6 months rego versus 12 would do the sale price much harm.
Might hold it for a little while until Im close to having the money on top to pick another bike up.
Dont want to have the money handy and not be able to sell my bike when something comes up.
Oh the decisions the decisions.
Im 32 though and have a nice no claim of 60% which helps with insurance and since being over 30 went to a full licence. So that is a nice thing for a change.
Also looking forward to going on a few rides with mates and maybe getting to for a central coast run when it comes up and not feeling like Im playing catch up at every set of lights. Makes you push that bit harder to catch up and I dont enjoy that.
Oh well thanks heaps for all the advice guys and gals.
Got way more responses than I expected.
Good to see the sense of community is still going strong.
Cheers

Well the good news is that the GPX has gone to a new home. The guy seemed chuffed with it. Managed 3700 for it. It's only been 4 hours and already I'm missing having a bike.
Sitting here reading the forum just makes me want to go for a ride.
Maybe even more so because I know I can't.
Oh well at least its another step in getting another bike.
Time sure is going to drag it's festery ass while I save up for another.
boohooo

Congrats on the sale
Yes going from a 250 to a 600 is a bit of a jump, but I still think that the biggest leap is going from never having ridden to your first bike (usually a 250), so I am sure you'll have no problems adjusting.
Good luck with the search and stick with what really suits your needs and riding style above all else.

Kawasaki reliability started *way* before the GPX range.......it started way back in the 60's, and was *cemented* with the Z900. They were, and are, unbreakable.
Good luck with your search, your new bike is out there somewhere mate, you just have to find it ......

Man how did you get 104k's on the original clutch?
My 03 636 has 12k on it & the clutch is slipping & talking to the local bike shop bloke he knows of mates that had various roadies ZX7/CBR900/GSXR's & between 7k & 25k for a slightly "FUN" ridden roadie clutch was all they got.
