Smitty1955 wrote:clunks.......
are caused by three things
1) bad gear selection or selectors
2) inappropriate power INPUT..into the power train and its effects
3) inappropriate power outputs... and its effects
ok
1)..caused by the rider ..
mismatching gear speeds and engine speeds and/or a misadjusted gear selector..either ya foot or the selector!
just make sure..there is no slop and its adjusted properly...to fit ya
foot and its movement (up or down)
and the clutch is adjusted properly...from handlebars down...
2)..can be caused by too high an idle speed (which causes a clunk specially selecting 1st)... to not backing off enuff when changing gears
In other words..too much engine or power input keeps the tension on the drive train...which will give a clunk when you release the tension (by pulling in the clutch)
(3)
caused by a worn input (primary)chain..which is VERY unlikely
or a bad adjusted (too tight or too loose) drive chain or a misaligned rear wheel....or stuffed Damper,Rear Hub Shock (as the yanks call it or Cush drive to us...) or worn swing arm connections (bearings etc)

most likely???
chain misadjusted..too loose I guess...
or misadjusted selector mechanism
with a tad too high carby setting...

btw
every bike i have had...from spewzuki Ts185
to MachIII to GPz750turbo..to the mighty GPx..
all had a bit of a clunk
depends on whether the 'bit' is too much

yeh, or as mentioned earlier in the thread, could just be a typically tuff Kwaka gear box.

Dear Sinsay Yoda .... You're Slipin Maaayte I give ya the big Build up and you run out some
"tree hugging pinko hippie" engineering talk WTF

"TUFF STUFF MAKES BANG NOISES"
woulda sufficed.
Second Attempt was a bit better but maayte whats the story ?????

Must be interference from having your head under Europee'in Cars all weekend messing with the " FORCE " or something.
Cheers Brett.
PS. I Wanna hear the Boobies Falling off the Waterbottle story at PI (My Shout)

i liked the big spinny bit, gets wacked by the do hickey & the thingymajig wil go clunk type explanation as well, although any 1 of those answers would do. What a forum, ask a simple question, get several different technical & simple answers.Let it run in mate, all those sexy surfaces on those gears r only just gettin 2 know each other, but soon enuff the courting will b over & they'll b ready 4 sum hot & heavy action!, & welcome 2.

"TUFF STUFF MAKES BANG NOISES"
and then stops working...boooom..you walk!

"I Wanna hear the Boobies Falling off the Waterbottle story at PI"
she was blonde too..but I didn't marry her!
mind you, seeing her 20 years later...nearly caused a divorce
and that story, I will tell at PI
hehe

one problem....
not all are....they do stop working after they go bang!
so you walk!
ever tried pushing a bike jammed in gear, after you blew the box!
*doh*
and having had to rebuild a few 'boxes
yes, they (Kwaka boxes)are good but not perfect
I have never found one that is
so
we take an intelligent approach ..to fixing what we got! :D

aaaah..now I see
you blokes like simple answers....
well how about this one....?
the doodad when pushed, connects with the widget
which places force on the arblaster (which is part of the
whole darn thingy) which makes the whosamajiggy thing
go fark..it can't do that, so a CLUNK takes place....

is that spatial enuff????
and may the force be with you........

Yoda ... Ian ... Smithy ... Mayyyte. Calm down ... settle ... breath in .... ok that better ... good.
I didnt say Young Matty had replaced the master ..... Heavens FORBID.
That could be Catastrophic, apocalyptic, Unfathomable 'n pretty bloody ordinary as well.
Mate But
BANG DONT MEAN BROKE can do but dont

I mean when i was a Boy I WAS CONVINCED that the Big Bang theory referred to My older Brother, A Pristine GPZ1100B(Red of Course), A Bottle of Panthers Piss, A Brunette, A Blanket and a 6 pack of Frangers ??????.

So it's all good, BANG AINT BAD, Can be but Aint......

Well, I'd noticed my new beastie is awful clunky too - just over 10k kms on it now so I thought it should've been worn in by now, so I tried Marek's suggestion of preloading the lever a bit before I pull in the clutch...
Works a treat - I'm clunk free :D
I might drop the lever a bit more too so I don't have to think about preloading it as much.

Ummm.........
can anyone say
"Kawasaki"???

How many fly buys does this earn me??

I have heard alot of concerns with the Kawasaki gear box
but
all seems to be ok,
it's just a Kawasaki gear box.

I treated the gear box on my ZZR250 like crap
she held together nicely,
in fact she is still going (I know the owner!).
Now on my ZX6
I hear it from N-1 changes especially.
I am not too fussed by it.

Kawa GB are great 8)

Say it with me guys - *KAWASAKI*

No worries here mate

Brett...
As the oldest (in my family), I have to tell you
it was a MachIII (never did get excited 'bout the big Gpz's)
several bottles of Abbotts lager (we did drink and ride..back then)
she was a blonde, it was a car rug...
and Durex mate...was the brand........

and there is NOTHING wrong with my memory....
when it comes to this....

Brett
the old master never loses it.....
it is cooooooooooooooooooooooooool.... :)
I can be as upmarket or as dirtbag, as anyone else here
an engineering intellectual or greasejockey
as the case demands
hehe

but
thank you, for your thoughts and concern anyway......
that was nice.

cheers

Judging by the number and frequency of some member's post on here, they could quite happily have their own little forum. The end result would still to be the same, as some always feel the need to both have the final word and be correct.
I think some peeps just give up on trying to discuss a point:roll:

Hmmmm, now let me see. Three thoughts come to mind;
-An old bike and a Brighton address does not equal upmarket.
-Cant recall any red gpx doing monos or burnouts, or even leaning over very far lately
-Yep, come across the same as most intellectuals and engineers I know

Some people have just got it all.
