You see how car drivers are all subconsciously trying to kill us! <edit> Stereo just beat me to saying it! </edit>
Ditto to what the others have said about allowing room to get out of trouble - I tend to ride in the right wheel track if I'm in the left lane, or the left wheel track if I'm in the right lane. Also - cars can brake much more effectively than bikes, particularly if the road is wet, so never get too close to the car in front. (Of course, by doing this you create a gap that people in the next lane feel they must fill by pulling in front of you!)
Anyway, you've had your first run in with a dill and you were smart enough to avoid him, so that's a good sign!
