Possibly fouled the plugs, try whipping them out clean em in petrol with a wire brush (or replace em) and try again

ok, tryed kickin it.
thank for the suggestion mina, but no avail.

over a half slab conversation with my old man, he finaly told me that the woodruft key is in place mainly to protect the drivetrain from damage in the event of a backfire, the likely cause of the problem.
thanks mike for pointin me in the right direction.

problem is i'm not confident enough to attack the problem without a manual. i got basic mechanical knowledge but bikes are new territory. has anyone got one for a zxr250? or know where i can get one?

anyway i'll have another poke around in the morn.

Doesn't look like the woodruft key is the problem.

plugs leads and pins lok fine s far as i can tell.

i'm just gonna give it a full service and general clean up, put her back together and take t from there.

any oil in particular i need for the box and engine?

any tips would be very helpful.

I'd put money on the backfire being unrelated to the continuation of the starting problem. The reason you managed to pump so much fuel into the exhaust pipe in the first place is because the bike wasn't starting.

The first thing I'd check is the battery. If it's low on charge (voltage between the terminals less than ~11.5V), it won't be able to simultaneously spin the starter motor and power the ignition system.

Pull it out and check the fluid level in the cells, too.

A few ZXR250's, including mine when I had it back in 1998, have suffered deteriorated stator windings in the generator. This, in turn, causes the reg-rec to die from overwork and, as it's then no longer being charged properly, for the battery to follow suit.

As a rule of thumb, if a bike which has been running ok up until then suddenly refuses to start after a period of quiescence (weeks, days, even overnight in some cases), the first thing to check is the battery.

As for trying a clutch start, what technique are you trying to use?

The battery does make sense, i'll check that tomorrow.

as for the rolls start, put it in 1st, grabbed the clutch, ran like buggery down the street and dropped the clutch.

thanks heaps for the tips tho.

i'll keap all updated.

thought about that, i would always start a car in 2nd, but the neutral finder doesn't allow me to get into second while i'm not moving.

Either walk the bike around and try to kick it up above first or while your rolling it downhill, kick it to first, then second/third and then dump the clutch to start it.

What fuel are you using? I use Optimax and after sitting for a while (certain components evaporate off) she doesn't like to start, but she always gets there.........eventually. Good luck.

were you trying to roll start it by yourself? last time I tried that it took two people and a bit of effort to get it going
