I did look into it, it just doesn't seem worth it.

Organise and pay for you own temporary road registration, insurances, maintenance of your bike. Pay for haulage, pick up your bike from east coast (portland), travel almost as far as the west coast and than have to ride back to the east coast (portland) to ship it back to sydney.

Its roughly 4000km one way from LA to Chicago, I wasn't planning on riding 8k & don't have anything remotely that resembles a touring bike.

fair enough.
hireage probably better anyway as you don't have to worry if you drop your bike in another country.
