Sure it was The cars fault for coming out, but It was also the riders fault he crashed, given that he could have gotten out of it.

It's a pity because they had a real chance to teach about roadcraft.

The message could have been:

'If when approaching the intersection he had dropped his speed, covered the break and prepared for a car to come out he wouldn't have locked his brakes out of shock, would have been able to steer effectively, and would have avoided the impact'.

On a different topic, what do the police investigators do in the case of vehicles with ABS? Without skid marks, can they tell what speed the rider was travelling at?

All different areas of a crash scene can give hints to vehicle speed. Mathematical formulas based on scrap marks in the road, the mass of the vehicles and how far they shifted off line on impact and so on and so on.

One of the biggest giveaways in alot of major incidents are the speedos/tachos. They often remain showing the last exact readings when they're destroyed on impact. Take your revs and selected gear into account and you can fairly accurately calculate the speed.

Major collisions units have an amazing amount of ways to calculate speed.

Don't forget the independent eye witnesses that are willing to give highly accurate, specific, and detailed accounts......

Oh, yea, like this one time, I was watching Columbo, and this bloke died and his wristwatch stopped at the time of death, and this solved the riddle.

I know of an insurance claim that was rejected, as the assessor was able to prove the keys were not in the ignition at the time of impact with another vehicle.

The ad came on tonight with the opening line of something like "how can we change things so the motorcyclist gets home" to which I yelled in response "HOW ABOUT THE FARKIN CAR DOESN'T TURN IN FRONT OF HIM!!"

Her immediate reply was that "you didn't hear a massive uproar from car drivers when they did the ad with the car hitting the pedestrian. No one was crying that the pedestrian walked out infront of the car. Stop being a bloody sook".

Fair point? Are we all just sooking up like little cry babies?

Public hearing into “reconstruction” ad

Will be held in Melbourne on August 31, with members of the TAC, police and Victorian Motorcycle Council in attendance to state their cases

The Victorian Road Safety Committee, as part of its current inquiry into motorcycle safety, will be conducting a public hearing in Melbourne on August 31 on the motorcycle "reconstruction" television advertisement by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), which first went to air in May this year.

Members from the TAC and Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Bellion from Victoria Police will appear before the committee, as will Mr Peter Baulch, who’s the Chairman of the Victorian Motorcycle Council.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the hearing, which wil be held between 10.00am and 1.00pm at 55 St Andrews Place, Melbourne.

The TAC advertisement created a whirlwind of discontent when it first went to air, galvanising a large number of motorcyclists to sign off on an on-line petition, and a top lawyer who specialises in road safety, John Voyage, said: “The approach from TAC leaves the public with the impression that if you are a car driver and you fail to give way, you’d better hope the motorcycle was speeding – you could get away with murder.”

Be great to attend the meeting, if it wasn't slap bang in the middle of a working day where I cannot attend.
