No, you missed the point. It is not a new car. You could keep it for another 15 years and still claim, by your logic, that it is "like new" - and then demand that it be repaired with brand new parts. Lots of people do. This isn't personal, its just a general rant about everybody who suffers from that mentality.
I've bought lots of repairable writeoffs. Then I go to the wrecker and get parts from one the same (often the same colour even) and make the car almost exactly as it was. It isn't rocket science. The insurers write them off on the price of new parts, because the owners want it "just like new" ... then they pay out many thousands and recoup a few hundred when I buy it at auction. Where do they get the rest? Easy - they charge YOU, and every other premium holder, more.

When does a car become not new, when it rolls of the production line?

Or once its off the drawing board and the designers start on a new design?

The minute you sign the sales contract?

After 10k kms?

5 years when second hand parts become more available?

It use to be that repairers used 2nd hand parts, I think you will find they are no longer willing to do that and quote new so as not to have 2nd hand parts fail and cover warranty re-work because the insurers wont.

Daisy, I think you may be outvoted - if an accident is not my fault (or Jonnos etc), then why should the vehicle repair result in a POTENTIAL reduction in value. I will say no more on the subject as we are all entitled to our own opinions even if yours is wrong

Cool. Just remember that when you're paying your exorbitant premiums. Indeed, if an accident is not your fault, why do you even need insurance?

Daisy you obviously haven't read the full thread - it is not my insurance but the insurance of the old dear who hit me, so it's not my fault and not my insurance.

You are dreaming if insurance premium will go down as a result of that. As if insurance companies will pass that on. They will just inflate their bottom line.

When do you draw the line and say it doesn't have to be replaced with a new part? 6 months? 12 months? Therein lies the problem
