Yeah that's bullshit. Theres no law against having an aftermarket muffler on any vehicle. As Dave mentioned they ditched the labelling of exhausts years ago. If it's too loud then that's another story but you can get a vehicle blue slipped with an aftermarket exhaust. I did it, Tim did it with his Bandito. If everything else is OK take it to a blueslip guy and get him to check it out.

I don't know what avenue you've got to protest it, maybe check with the RTA.

Good luck though and let us know how you go......oh and welcome, hang around the site we're pretty cool....well not me but others are. :D

I went to my Mechanic and I told him about it as well and apparently it is illegal to change your stock standard pipe.

This is what he slapped me with...... States nothing about the noise being and issue.

He ticked the "exhaust noise emissions" box. Surely a noise test is all you need.

If its illegal to change your stock standard pipe, what can you do if you can't buy a new stock standard pipe if your original needs replacement ???
You could move to SA, we have no problems here :D

Mate i got done for noise recently and you have to take it to a certifyed mechanic, from memory there is two in sydney.I went to a joint at albion park rail to get mine past but it has to be 94 db(i used two baffles to shut mine up)they take a photo of it and if it passes (or not ) they send the info to the RTA . If it fails they give you time to get it fixedPS take it to an exhaust joint first to see how loud it is and go from there!

I was always curious about that. The stock ZX12 exhaust is rated @ 98 db at halfway to redline according to the sticker on the frame, and that's got to be legal. 94 is bloody quiet.

thats what i forgot to mention i had to hold it at 5250 approx,i road down riped the muffler off put a baffle in the front and bolted another one on the back on the side of the road and while in the process of doing this two cops drove buy
the bike would not run properly with the baffles in.

As far as I'm aware an aftermarket exhaust only has to conform to the original sound level for that bike. There are a number of sound levels depending on the age of the bike. The stationary rating is made at the rpm where the engine is making half it's (stock) maximum power. The noise measurements are taken during stable operation and decel to idle. The maximum reading becomes the recorded value.
