I think you did the right thing mate. Had you played too innocently it may have been worse.
Sounds like it wasn't as dodgy as initially thought - though it does seem strange he didn't pull you both over straight away, or call another cop to do so (happened to me once on my P's).
The phone call is strange.

Thx for replies guys, gave me a game plan going in. If it was anything involving losing my license I would have involved lawyers etc but just for this, Neg driving is ok.

Incident was in newy on king st.

Fairly sure I got off lightly cos of my occupation, he wasnt nearly as nice/informal with the car driver, pretty sure he did him for speeding and dangerous driving.

Depends on your interpretation
If one unmarked car pulls in front of you slows all the traffic down while another is sitting right up your arse just waiting to pounce, then the front car pulls out of that lane & you take off with the one sitting behind tailgating & more of less pushing (not forcing ) you to go faster then when you reach the desired speed the lights come on & you are farked..... well it happened to me in an XR8 ute & when both unmarked cars pull over it looks pretty suss.
In fact they had to call in a marked HWP & strangely enough reduced the fine.... almost like they knew their actions were a bit suss, there was 1/2 hour of deliberation between them ........
I know it was me that was speeding, I know I am responsible for my actions but when you have a big black car up your arse tailgating you, what do you do?

Go to the nearest police station, with message & find the highest cop in there.[NOT A LOW RANKING OFFERSER] Ask him what he thinks of it?
I have plenty of mates that are high ranking cops, & I doubt this is propper procedure.
Dont admit to anything, If the cop was that concerned he would be waiting at your house with book in hand.
He maybe just giving you the heads up, that if he see,s you riding like a nutter again he will book you.
I would get to the bottem of it. It could be a scam of sorts.

Aardvark- Your right apparently entrapment is not recognised as a defense in Australia.

But then there is a distinction between cases where law enforcement officials provide a person with the 'mere opportunity' to commit a crime and cases where the offence occurs as a result of the illegal actions by law enforcement.
In Bunning v. Cross, the High Court found that a court could exclude evidence obtained by unlawful means on public policy grounds.

So in Robs case( if his facts where correct ):
1) Did the first car that pulled in front of him follow correct overtaking procedures and not merely cut him off?
2) If the second cop was tailgating him wouldn't that be breaking the law?
3) Would the first car driving in front slowly be considered dangerous?
4) Does the NSW police force have the right to calculate and give out fines at a monetary value at their discretion? In this case a discounted value?

Im not sure though, but i think its not very fair if the cops induce u to commit a offense when you were not going to do so in the first place. I mean tailgating pisses EVERYONE off and is very dangerous as well.

Two cars seized over street racing

TWO P-platers have had their cars confiscated after they were caught street racing in southeastern Sydney.
Police in an unmarked vehicle saw two Mitsubishi Lancers allegedly accelerating along Foreshore Road in Botany about 11pm (AEST) on Saturday.
Police will allege a radar check revealed the vehicles reached a speed of 140km/h before they were stopped.
The street is a signposted 70km/h zone.
A 26-year-old man from Birrong and a 20-year-old man, from Bass Hill, both P2 provisional licence holders, were issued with field court attendance notices for the offences of street racing and drive manner dangerous.
The 26-year-old driver had two young men as passengers, while the 20-year-old driver had four young male passengers in the vehicle with him.
The men's cars and licences were confiscated on the spot.
Both drivers are due to appear in Waverley Local Court on October 20.

1) the decoy car indicated & changed lanes as I was approaching forcing me to brake quite heavily, of course this meant the cops behind me were even closer but as I accelerated they kept the same close distance...... MOTHER FORKERS!
2) I could make out 2 figures behind the tinted windscreen they were that close... stupid me thought 2 occupants means no coppers
3) wasn't that slow..... just reduced the overall speed by about 30K
4) Kev I would have lost the lot for 12 months + possible vehicle loss + Huge fine +++++ who knows what else, I am not complaining... the 3 months & $1.4K odd fine was enough
5) Has it changed the way I drive?.... NO
6) Would I do it again....Yes, If I am being tailgated like that

Kev Being there & going over every little detail while I waited in my car almost crapping my dacks for half an hour waiting for them to decide what to do with me, the details are etched in my mind as to what I did & what they did, the facts were correct, I was going to take it to court but they had taken down the details that I was doing over 55K over the limit & had only booked me for 30 & over so the question came up that if a Judge decided to throw the book at me for the full offence I would be worse off... Kinda farked in all accounts.

See two vehicles apparently racing. Obtain both regos. Only manage to stop one.... does anyone know how hard it is to actually stop TWO vehicles???

Look up the registered owners details. Punch their name into the Police computer (or the White Pages), call the registered owner. If you can't get a contact number for them, then you do the next best thing.... turn up constantly on their doorstep at stupid hours of the morning.

As for "NOT A LOW RANKING OFFERSER", I think you'll find in this day and age that most of the lower ranked officers have a far better understanding of how to do their job as Police. The higher up the ladder you go, the more you simply become a personnel manager.
