aww its a good offer guys but i reckon i will just stick it in the backyard with the potplants.

However - i do have a box of z650 parts that i was going to put on ebay. But i doubt youll need any of the bits Mick - yours is pretty mickey mouse aswell.

a straight chrome rear mudguard, speedo and tacho, starter motor, etc etc

and yeh, whoever said it would not handle well, knows very little about z650's.....they were regarded as a 'Giant-killer' back in their day, due to their ability to out-handle anything in the 1-litre class.......and they lost little in the grunt department either.

oooh i must say brilliant job, you have filled me with inspiration, i start next week on building my 77 Z650 which I have owned for 10 years, been in the shed for 4 years, and now its time to bring it back from the dead.

Hey I had to ask you a question. i seriously love the way you have set the gauges and id like to do something similar, is there any links that you may be able to put forward as to where I could get some of those parts.? Also i was wondering about your handle bars.... do you recommend that style above clipons?

any help would be greatly appricated..... thanks for posting the pics. ill do the same during the course of its re build.

The guages and dash are custom - i did some CAD designs and had a friend cut them out of 4mm aluminium on a CNC machine. The guages themselves are Zodiac brand, who do mostly harley parts- so made sure i got them in the correct ratio for 70's Kawis. I used the existing wiring and dash lights but replaced them with coloured "indicator lights" that i bought off the net.

The Ace bars are great. They give the bike a great look but you can get the similar look with clip-ons. I think i might try clip-ons eventually but i know they wont give me much clearance around the tank because you would have to have them set under the triple tree - mounted low. I have these on a 45 degree down angle and that seems to be perfect for both comfort and clearance.

The grips are not that comfortable so i think i might change them when i find a set i like. I thought they would be, cause ive seen them on all the old cafe racers and bobbers. Maybe i just need to wear them in...

Excellent work can you give us a breakdown of the parts used? I have just restored my 77 z650 and I want to convert my 1980F1 into a cafe racer so I'm keep to source some similar bits.

In particular - what is the tail cone off?

Metal where did you get the handle bars from?

these are standard 'Ace' bars - if you want a set I can get some from our local tyre shop here, he has some on the shelf at the moment.

Classic 70's style handlebars - they are a great look on a bike of this era.

Thats a damn nice looking bike you got there. Wish i had something like that in my shed
