Very sad that this guy passed today, as it is every time someone does, but why would that affect future events? It's a dangerour thing we do, and occasionally this is going to happen. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool.

I heard the attending copper interviewed on the news on the way home from work.
Basically he said that it was a well run activity and that anyone planning to do one in the future should still do it

The afterburner days are extremly well run with noone being allowed to go out without a proper briefing and instruction. there is also a limit to how many people go out on the track. Unfortunately riding on 2 wheels is dangerous at this stuff is bound to happen at some time or the other. I just hope the fun nazis dont get on this and try and ban the event just because they dont have that perspective. Take care people. and ride safe.

One of the local boys does the AB track day each year Rob - I am pretty sure he said it is run by the normal operator (PI Ride Days), and it does have normal groups - biggest difference is that you just pay by the session, I think it was $50 a session or something like that.....

Thanks Gos, & csgup1 you are right about the danger aspect, it is so easy to become complacent about the inerrant dangers about the sport we are involved in.

"We'll be inspecting the bike and it might have been a case where he just fell off," WorkSafe spokesman Michael Birt said.

Under the terms and conditions for the ride, the organisers recommended that all riders wear full leathers and those choosing not to wear the protective gear were restricted to 120km/h.

I thought you weren't allowed on if you didn't have full leathers, thats been the case for all the ride days i've done at the Island.....and the 120K thing, how would they enforce that?...

which rule - the one about enforcing a 120kmh limit, if rides choose to ride in textile/Draggins etc ??

How *does* a ride-day operator enforce that sort of rule ?? Are there radar guns around the track to measure speed, and riders are black-flagged if they exceed the limit ?

I am really interested in how this sort of arbitrary restriction could actually be *enforced*, because most decent bikes can do that limit in 2nd gear !

I don't think this will be the case at all. Any track-day presents the possibility of death or serious injury - its part of the game. That's what keeps insurance companies in business. If the activity was too dangerous, no insurance would be available.....and neither would track days.

It will be investigated by Vic Workcover , not sure if it would be treated as a workplace death or not.....but at the end of the day, activities like this have an inherent high risk of injury or death, and we all need to keep that in mind every track-day we attend.

Still, leathers bit aside, first i've heard of a 120K speed limit on any kind of ride-day, regardless of who is running it...
Ridiculous type of thing to try and enforce!.

Poor bastard, but as others have said, I'll be pretty fuckin' happy if I'm still getting 'round on a sportsbike at 72. RIP dude.

This death is like all others, extremely sad for anyone involved regardless of age/length of innings, celebrity status etc.

So where does insurance come into this...Don't you sign an indemnity saying that you can't sue anybody for anything?

I feel for all his loved ones, family or friends, as well as the poor bugger who hit him... how awful

Whilst I feel for the family and friends, I'd rather go that way, doing something I love than through some drawn out illness.

And to all track day punters and wanna be track day adicts, if someone slides out in a corner, hitting the brakes makes you follow them.
