Years ago i bought a car new with my ex through the scumbags at G.E. because i "didn't know better". Lets just say that i wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire, well I would, minus the fire. Sold the car after 18 months, owing about 4.5k over what i would get for the car second hand. We got a loan through my ex's sister (even though it was in my name alone) for the difference between the sale price and the amount owed. I wrote up an agreement that stated i would take the payment for the car in the form of a bank cheque made out to G.E. and would hand over posession of the car within 4 working days. A copy was signed and kept by both parties and the next day i went to G.E. and got the car paid out. Got two copies of a letter from G.E. stating that they were no longer financially interested in the vehicle and then the next day the car was gone.

As part of the deal i also got their old mazda 626 and that took $800 off the sale price of the vehicle, saved me looking for a car and also meant that they didn't have to worry about shifting their old car. Worked out quite well for all concerned. I was lucky though, could have gone a lot worse.

Good to hear, definitely call your current financier and get a payout figure (just remember it may vary a little bit depending on how much interest accrues between when you get the figure and when the loan is paid out). Certainly approach a credit union, with this they are quite good with these kinds of things (i'm never going back to a "big bank" again if i can help it). You may find you can get an unsecured loan quite easily, especially as the total figure is under 20k (the cutoff seems about 30k)

i just refinanced mine from amf to teachers credit union. Amf interest rate was 16% teachers credit is 9.88%. Do this and you should find your repayments will come down as well

loans through the dealer enticing at the time get a bike over 5 years and pay bugger all for it i.e $50 a week. High interest (16%) easy access to get them and pay couple of hundred to pay out early. Been done twice amf/ymf and Honda finance. Next one will be through the bank
