Have a look at this: http://www.motorplex.com.au/competitors ... ZS1698.pdf

At the bottom of the first page is the new AS sticker. You'll notice it has changed slightly, but it still has the five ticks and a serial number.

A major issue with wearing something like this and having an accident is that it gives your insurance company and the TAC a stick with which they can beat down your compensation and insurance payout.

thks, Mick
Hi All,

Russ' helmet is definitely legal in Australia, as I mentioned above the law was recently change to allow other certifying bodies to test & approve helmets.

TUV is one of the bigger organisations in Europe and no doubt Shark get a better deal from them rather than trying to negotiate with multiple organisations in the many counties/jurisdictions that they sell in including ours. I expect we'll see several others in the future as well, the difficulty is knowing who is a valid certification organisation and who isn't. If you have any concerns about a particular helmet, feel free to PM me, I can check with the technical people where I work and find out "informally" if it's ok or not.

The various motor sports bodies are going to have to catch up with this I guess, but I imagine the are free to accept only certain certifying bodies if they wish.

Cheers
Matt

so check first!
Is that because the rules prohibit it or because the officials are not up to date with the new standards testing rules?

rules prohibit it.....no proper AS decal + ticks no race :(

from the ANDRA website - (http://www.andra.com.au/subpage.asp?Men ... =Bulletins)

ANDRA CLARIFIES AUSTRALIAN STANDARD ON HELMETS

ANDRA has recently launched an investigation into helmets currently available in the Australian market through a generic brand supermarket chain. The helmet contains potentially misleading information with the attached label / decal indicating that the helmets compliance with the Australian Standard is monitored by another overseas company.

The information contained in the packaging that comes with the helmet indicates that the helmet has been tested in accordance with the Australian Standard 1698. After consultation with SAI Global, Standards Australia’s testing and marketing division, this has been rejected as true and correct and ANDRA has been informed that the only accepted Australian Standard Certified products are covered by the ‘5 ticks’ label / decal. The following statements have been made by SAI Global representatives;

“Please note this helmet has not been certified by SAI Global. Products certified by SAI Global undergo a rigorous certification process. This means that the consumer can be confident that when they purchase an item with the ‘5 ticks Standards Mark’ it fully complies with the Standard and the factory is constantly monitored for quality and the consistency of the product they produce. In the case of crash helmets, if the product fails there is a high likelihood of death or serious injury, therefore if an individual purchases inferior product, clearly they have made the choice of putting a financial gain (the savings) ahead of their life.”

The ‘5 ticks’ Standards Mark which is the only acceptable Standards Australia label / decal, is silver with a red edge with the ‘5 ticks’, current standard and bar code

The only trouble is that when you rip them off they leave the foil sticker backing with the word 'VOID' behind on the donor helmet...and both the sticker and donor helmet are now useless.

Smitty's post a few above this one looks pretty damning for Russ' helmet.

investigating further.

Understanding all that is writing above I am learning that most clubs maybe alittle out of date in their understanding of the AS

It clearly states that the new standard is AS?NZS 1698:2006 which is printied on my label

also I did a search to find more out about TUV Rheinland Group and my helmet and found this

http://www.tuvdotcom.com/pi/web/Tuvdotc ... hbox=61666

clearly states the AS and product ID.

Still I have contacted the supplier and they are chasing it up for me from their supplier.

Lets see how we go.

Hmmmm I'll have to check my Shark helmet to see which sticker it's got on it.

confirmation from the suppplier backs up what Mat has stated. No longer is the SAI the only body allowed to compliance helemets in Australia.

I am guessing a few compitition bodies will need to catch up.

I wonder if this will reduce the price of helmets? Sourcing the AS compliance was always an expensive exercise, so with competition in the field now, perhaps the costs will come down.

We may also see some more brands available if this happens. It always puzzled me why a brand like Bell is not availbale here?

OK Russ the next question is where is the serial number required by Scrutineers?...... the new stickers don't have em & they are required for racing
Each helmet has an individual number so it can be identified, If you have a stack & the helmet is damaged that note the number..... ect ect.

Russ if you are going to race you will need to verify.....
MA sup regs on helmets for 2009:

ID number 61666 as stated on the sticker below.

You can search it on the TUV Rheinland website as I linked above.

I will be sending MA an email confirm further as I am assuming they will need to change and adjust.

Yep having a poke around, it looks to be that it is just the TUV certification Number for Shark helmets overall & not an individual helmet number.

so far from Terry Oniell. Very honest and as suspected unaware of any change. I wouldntbe surprised that this is the case for all competition bodies.
Hi Russell,

I must admit you have caught me on the hop here. I was totally unaware of the change in helmet standards in Australia.

My guess is if this is now an accepted Australian standard then we would accept it as well but I will have to do some more research before being able to say 100%.
I will continue to keep all updated

any standard change would have to have a major advertising campaign
