Why have unified Australian Road Rules if individual states are just going to legislate exceptions?
+1 for that.
Though we really don't have unified laws at all when you consider the different licencing requirements, different penalties, different registration rules, the list goes on.

I can't believe you were able to do that in VIC, why have a solid line? Just makes it confusing.

As far as I', concerned, a broken white line is a give way line - you can cross but have to give way to traffic in the other lane. A solid white line you can not cross. You'll find most (if not all) solid white lines have broken parts at right turns.

but look at NSW...no uturns unless signed as permitted (and yes I got caught but the cop was ok about it)
where as
in Vic you can do a uturn anywhere unless its signed ...NO uturns
(and of course with the proviso you give way to EVERYTHING...push bikes and pedestrians INCLUDED)

now you cant do a uturn over an unbroken white line...simple (but stupid)
which means I cant do one in my street...which has an unbroken solid white line down the middle

sounds like I spend an evening out there with some black paint and make it 'broken'

No, if you go into a driveway you are "leaving the road" which is legal to do over a solid white line according to the rules wording, as I quoted above. So, turn right into driveway(leaving the road) then reverse out and proceed in opposite direction, legally. Many people do u turns this way anyway due to narrow roads etc...

Why is it stupid that you can't do u turns unless its signed? To me it depends on location, the circumstances you are attempting to do a u turn (i.e. on a major road, especially if you are doing it from middle of the road and thus holding up traffic then yeah it is stupid) and definition of the law. Interpretation and application will be the problem.

yuo know what makes them look really stupid,As you are approaching a turning lane you are now allowed to drive straight over the painted traffic island.I was busted for this years ago  So if you can now drive over it what the fuck is it there for and whos going to explain to the pedestrian standing on this traffic island why you are about to run them over.I bet your not allowed to do this in other states so there goes there universal road rules bullshit spin

They can legislate what they fucken well like.
As far as I'm concerned common sense will prevail and the laws only exist if there's a coppa around to enforce them.
It is getting wildly beyond a joke.
