I have the Sony funtopia head phones and an MP3 player, I dont have the volume that loud that I dont hear sirens. However I find that you tend to be more aware of your surroundings ie traffic placement etc. I find the music not distracting at all, in fact in traffic I find it a calming influence, bopping away to music instead of road rage!
This may not be for everyone, but give it a try, well worth it in my opinion.

PS the Sony Funtopia earplugs are excellent as the earbuds come in 3 sizes.

i wore earphone thingys one year on a trip to the island, i liked the idea of music on the boring bits but when i wanted to "have a little fun" i found it hard to concentrate properly. plus the music i was listen ing to made you a bit keen

but the biggest thing was they were fucking uncomfortable to the point i didnt want to stop and take my helmet off and get them out as that hurt more than leaving them on.

i've NEVER done it again.

then again i dont wear earplugs either, hated them when i was in the army and had to wear them at the range.......do you know how hard it is to shoot accurately when you've just run 100m, hit the deck and gotta look shoot the target with your head about to burst

hey, this has been a pretty good discussion!! i am basically concluding from it all that i have to just bite the bullet and try it myself. eh?!
thx 4 all the feedback everyone.... i have been using foamy ear-plugs for noise reduction, so i am used to having "something" in my ear.... why not some background music that i like? i am comparing it to when you're at a pub with the jukebox playing, or without one on!!!
i think i'll give it a go, and see what happens.......

ear plugs in ears.are ur bikes that noisy or is ur helmet just shit? is it legal to listen to music? id say not. plus all the volume skipping songs etc id lose to much concentration. although on a long ride would be good. break up the bordom.

First time I wore earplugs was on the way back from a gig in London at 3 in the morning. With empty roads and not hearing the exhaust until the revs picked up (was a standard can) - I didn't realise quite how fast I was progressing

I attempted music just the once. The choice of music seriously affects your mood and therefore speed. Unfortunately I chose Painkiller by Judas Priest, and got to work in record time For the more sedate cruise, I'd recommend something by Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon comes highly recommended

Different in the car though, gotta have some sounds on to help keep me awake.
Only wore an earpiece once and that was the instructor to rider 2 way radio.........ok for about 5 minutes and then I got tired of hearing his screaming

I find the whole experience completly different... Ridng != Driving...

FWIW, If I'm just commuting in the car, I listen to music... If I am giving it a good go in the car, I listen to the motor / turbo / exhaust...

On the bike, I'm usually concentrating on the road / bike / others too much to even think about listening to music, but in saying that, I haven't tried it... If I was giving it a good go though, I wouldn't be listening to any music...

Guess we are all different, doesn't really seem to be one solid opinion in here... :shrug:

I'm with Rossi not in the fast department but in the concentration one. i have a Minidisc player thay rule imo but no way I'm spending any of my $10 concentration on "The Reverend Horton Heat & his "Fucked up Ford" "

I listen to my MP3 player and 90% volume mostly on long rides and sometimes in Sydney traffic. The ear phones are small enough to fit into the ears but if they're not on properly they get uncomfortable after a while.

Never had a problem with lack of concentration through the bends or in wild Sydney traffic.
