My mum was against me getting a bike, I think my dad was to, mainly because of what my mum thought. I knew really he wanted me to get one thou, his way of talking me out of getting my license was telling me to get a dirt bike

My dad used to ride back in the day and when I found a photo of Mum pillioning on the back the resistance was over.

They never threatened to kick me out or anything like that, I think they were just worried I would end up dead. Which is fair enough, shows they care.

Mum eventually saw I was 1000% determined to get a bike and now only gets worried when I go on the track. My dad is really into my bikes and we are now rebuilding his old Triumph. He comes up to track days with me and takes a real interest in what I do with my bikes.

You should just talk to your parents about it. Be honest with them and show them that you are really serious about the bike thing. Including research you've done, training options and the money you've saved for quality gear. If you cant talk with them like adults then maybe it is time for you to move out. :kuda:

Funny you should say that Phil.....I got my current bike from an 18yr old kid who brought it and hid it at his bosses house....Untill his parents started to wonder where all his money was going (being only an apprentice).....They paid out the remainder of the loan when they found out and made him sell it(he was also only on his L's).....He put it on ebay for $11k with 800k's on it....So saved myself 5k compared to a new one :kuda:

I has to wait for my misses to let me get my bike and licence! lol, best thing for me was my older brother had a bike when he was 16 and never looked back, but coz the father in law is a bike rider and had many stupid crashes{last one almost killed him and he has one leg bigger then the other}, i wasnt aloud, now that im 27 and abit older then i was im not as stupid on the road, being the founder of vehicularmischief didnt help haha. but yeah i think with time and showing your loved ones that you are not going to be a complete wanker on the bike, they would come round to the idea of getting a pocket rocket!

Par for the course. Shows they care about you.

I find that once you're set on getting a motorbike, everyone who's against it tells you their horror story of the average motorcyclist who ran up the back of the lorry and got decapitated.. I remember when I was a lad telling my mum I got a motorbike and you could have cut the atmosphere with a knife, but I knew that she pillioned my dad when they were younger and my Dad and brother ride so it was a compelling case.

Just got to be realistic about the risks (they definitely are there) and weigh up whether the pleasure of riding outranks the risks - which you already know anyway.. Your parents will learn to overcome their fears and accept your new passion. Give it time. Call them after you get home from a ride - after a few they will realise you're not out there to beat Rossi round the industrial park.

Oh and get some quality protection - leathers, back protector, gloves, draggins and boots and explain how they protect you in a spill..

Both my parents rode bikes, so naturally they encouraged me to get one at a young age.
When I was old enough to get my car Ls they said wait 9 months and get your motorcycle licence.... so I did.
It took till I was 26 to get my car licence. I was lucky.

Good luck with it all.

Dad said "you'll never smoke in my House"
Dad said "you'll never have a Bike at my House"
Dad said a lot of shit but I always called his bluff and got away with it.
It's just a Parental protective reflex action and God know's I'm guilty of it myself....DOH!!!

Question is do want to live how others tell you without disowning the ones you love and those that love you.

Question is what will your regret most? buying the bike or not? I wish I had taken up road riding at 18 instead of 30, I fell I wasted 12 years. My dad bought my brother a CB250 as a project, he crashed it twice which made me think about it twice.

You have to make your own choice for better or not, only time will tell which was right, personally you should do what you believe is right.

I suppose the main thing that gets me down is that I tell dad about all the people I know with bikes who have never had a serious accident and he just says "yeah but youre stupider than those people" I keep telling him I'll be responsible but he doesnt have any faith in me... but I guess the only way to prove him wrong is to go out and be responsible on the road.

You should also look at yourself honestly and ask if he's right.
In case you didn't notice it's the ultimatum that I would personally have issue with - not the concern behind it.
Riding is a risk - and it's not just whether or not you're stupid, it's the other stupid people on the road too.
Somebody previously said talk it out - probably the best advice so far.
Not sure how old you are - I think that makes a difference too.
Your parents are within their rights to set rules in their house.
Everyone's relationship with their parents is different - so the way to handle this may be different for you than anyone else here.

She has a good reason to be concerned though. He crashes them more than he stays on them.

I'm glad that my old man used to take mum around Newcastle on the back of his AJS 350 back in the 50's......and that most of his brothers and his old man (my Pop) also rode bikes.

Mum always knew I would get a bike, and although she used to worry about it (like 30 years ago), she has gotten way over it. The old man was actually pretty happy when I got my first road bike at age 16..... :kuda:

Zackly the same scenario Gos, just in the UK
Mum said No .... Dad said.... "would you rather he pillion on some nutter who wants to show off ? Get him one of his own & he is responsible for his own safety"
Gawd I miss me Dad.......... dropped me off to pick up the bike and was waiting at the front gate to boot me off it - only so he could go hooning up the road, without a lid too
