I still can't get into the machine via the windblows login. I got the XP cd and tried changing the files with the recovery console, but it only changed his login from his name to "owner" and the owner can't login either. It has changed something in the registry to do with userinit.exe. Next is to rip out the hdd and install it as a slave - copy the stuff I need and then copy it back to a fresh install of windblows. Then reinstall all his programs ........ ahhh, to hell with that shit! I'll just copy his personal files over to xubuntu and nuke the partition with XP on it.
Anyone able to tell me how to make thunderbird in xubuntu read the emails from the XP partition? I know how to find them, but last time I tried to move them the fresh install wouldn't open them.

Import from outlook into thunderbird. >>> http://support.real-time.com/tbird/outlook_import.html

Just a thought, if they "need" XP to run specific apps, they could run a VM...

Download a copy of "Ultimate boot disk" it has an XP crack program that allows you to create a brand new admin account (oh yeah, windows is very secure :)

to be honest this sounds like the virus that HM's computer has, especially if there's logging in issues.

To disable system restore, click on Start/Programs/Accessories/System tools/System Restore, then click on settings on the left hand side.
Did all that to mine, and every damn time I run it it finds something it didn't find before the reboot. My big problem right now is nothing will update!! Can't get AVG, Windows Defender or even Superantispyware to update (even if I turn the firewall off). My computer is doing some really weird shit now

That's some nasty shit, but I don't think that is the one he got. This one changed the system file userinit and the registry entry for it and trying to remove it has done the actual damage. Originally it was simply throwing up hoax virus messages to get him to download something - but as soon as it hijacked internet exploiter he knew there was a real problem ... because he uses Firefox. ;)

mate that wasnt a derogatory comment... just boggles the mind sometimes how complicated something can be when its function is to streamline and make easy ones daily tasks...

interior design can be a fucking nightmare too, and its always the boring shit that is complicated ... and documentation drawings once looked scary to me but now i can read any set of drawings without a problem... so it is a matter of familiarity and knolwedge
