4 on road bike. 2 on dirt bike. (can't brake very hard on dirt and need to hold on more due to bumps on road surface) If you use 2 on a lot of road bikes, it limits the travel of the lever because your fingers get jammed between lever and grip. Lotsa road bikes have the brake lever touching grip on full brakes. Can't brake fully with fingers in the way. Another reason is leverage. Smallest fingers are furthest from the pivot and get the most leverage. They do a lot of work when braking despite being weaker than other digits.

I think also depends on what brakes you have, Mrs VTR 250 4 is a must my 636 with SS lines etc 2 and 848 with the Brembo's etc one and maybe 2 if its a hard braking corner.
With a set on monoblck Brembos will not want to use 4 fingers unless u want to kiss the ground in front of you.

1-3 on road bikes, 1 on track bike.
The brakes on the 250 are incredibly good. Soft pads help, as does a master cylinder the same bore as the ZZR600. Occasionally if I'm getting really tired I'll use two, but that's not often. Normally 1 finger's enough to pull the rear end off the deck (with precision) when I've got my 80kg back as far as I can get. The real problem with the 250 is that it's hard to use the back brake properly - it locks waaay to easily, especially after riding the 9 (what rear brake?).
On the ZZR, either 2 or 3. I like having my index finger over the throttle - I find it helps with control.
On the ZX9, either 1 or 2. Good brakes, but aren't as good feeling as the 250. The main issue is pad compound, but it's only a slight difference in feel, not enough of an issue for me to change 'em.
The only bike I have on which it is possible to get the brake lever to the bar is an old VF500F, and I'm working on fixing that (bigger master cylinder and braided lines). If I can get the others to touch my little finger on the bar, it's time to bleed the brake and/or replace something. Even if they're hot. I don't like bad brakes.

What happeneing to using four....so when you reach for the brake lever, you roll off the throttle.....at least that is what I was taught to do.

you will find the more fingers you lift of the bar the longer the bar is unstable. 2 fingers requires less effort and allows for great feel on the bars.
4 finger is alot easier for inexperienced riders thus why they train that way

Agreed Russ ....... I find my hand is generally twisted back as well while you are in a crouching position making it easier to use 2 fingers when reaching for the lever & be ready on the bars for a shit load of counter steering

I use 2 fingers for braking and four for clutch.
I find it easy to be braking and bleep the throttle for down shift gears.
Rossi use 3 fingers for braking

I find that I am a 2.5 man as well. My third finger is over the lever, so I'm sure it is doing something. But not much. I used to be a 4 finger fluzy but I guess I got lazy. Could also be that I havn't done the old "find a quiet street and destroy the brake pads" In a while so my technique is up to shit anyway.
