Hey thanks to all the guys that made positive and helpful responses...
I took it back and they absolutely guaranteed that it was changed and that the 'residual' old oil made it go that colour. Now this bike only has 10,000 klm... None the less thay changed it again for me at no charge after some persuasion. When they drained it, the old oil was still black (with 90 klm on it). Don't know what to make of it, but may just do my own in future.

When you do an oil change, there is still a *shitload* of residual oil left in the motor, coating the sump walls, in the oil galleries, basically everywhere inside the motor where oil normally goes. This residual oil is blacker than Uncle Chop Chop's heart !!

It may only be a thin film of oil, but in my experience, *brand new* oil will always change colour really quickly after an oil change, even when using a new filter. (Rob - was that photo taken after an oil change but before the engine was started again ?? ;) )

Its nothing to worry about, and even when you change the oil yourself, it will make no difference to the colour of the oil after you change it, and that oil colour will always appear as a very dark colour.......in the drain pan.

the trick is this - dip your finger in the oil when it has been changed (ie the old oil in the oil pan) - you should still be able to see your fingerprint 'through' the film of oil on the end of your finger (even if the oil in the pan appears dead black) - if you cannot see your fingerprint through the film of oil, *then* that oil is well and truly fucked. If you can see your fingerprint through the film of oil, then the oil is OK and has done its job, even if it 'appears' really black in the drain pan.

Gos, I had the motor running for 10 Minutes after the oil / filter change then let it settle for 1/2 an hour then topped up to the level shown. as far as I am aware the previous oil had seen 1 PI track day & 3 EC track days & came out relatively clean which backs up the guestimated usage ;)

Motul should be a caramel colour...

Have a look again to see it its still black, I doubt it will be... I've done a PI double followed by road riding and an EC to boot on the 6R and mine was darkish in colour but deffo far from black

Might be a good idea to do the oil and filter changes yourself.

I have done this plenty of times before with second hand bikes...... a sacrificial Flush can clean out the old oil (not the sludge) & 90K is probably a good run before dumping it & adding the new oil.......I use cheep oil for the flush to save $$$ & normally would ride about 20K before dumping ..... at least you know your engine oil is as clean as possible without a teardown.

So what's the verdict on the colour now gulfman?

Well, the new oil is a little lighter in colour depth, but still far darker than I would have expected. It's not as 'black', just very dark ...
The colour straight out of a sealed 4ltr container was also a bit on the dark side, but certainly not black.
I guess it's indicative of this particular oil...
