all these emisions changes are a bit crap, for cars its understandable, they're polluters, but bikes? ppssshhh
i think eventually the good old days of race mods to street bikes will be gone.
i know i'll e sure to keep the old pipes on the new bike!

Two things Neka,
1) this is america, who ever said "logical" ever entered into the argument.
2) think of this as an extension to the EPA legislation they have in California, to sell vehicles there at ALL they must have the smog protection gear, as well as have some idiotproof little plugs over the idle richness adjustment screws on carbies just in case you get any wise ideas about richening the idle circuit on your car/bike. Harsh penalies apparently if they do discover that there's been tweakage. *shrug*. Bike & car manufacturers may think its a bit of a pain in the arse, but its a nessecary evil to have any cars (sold and) registered within California. That's a big slice of retail pie their missing if they don't do it i might add.
b.t.w having BEEN in LA, i can sa that Los Angeles had the worst air pollution of anywhere i have ever been in my entire life. Im sure there's worse places, but they've got a lot of competition to win.

Hey, that's pretty reasonable. Most of your emissions come from cruise power (because you spend so much time there), and that's what CARB has prevented you from modifying. OK, it may result in your bike being a pig while cruising if you've modified it, but at least you can tune it for when you're giving it the berries. You guys realise that strictly speaking our EPA doesn't allow any changes, right? Especially removing cats, that's pretty much a sin from anybody's point of view but you all do it anyway.

it would have been easier to do what the exhaust manufactures do and just print "race use only" on each unit.
what is stopping someone in california from claiming to need a "race" version from another state and using it?
how long until there is a crack on the net for it?

I'm really gonna throw the cat amongst the pigeons here.
On most 600/1000cc sports bike - is it really necessary to run full exhaust systems and power commanders?
I have a 2007 ZX10 with Akra cans - it looks much better, sounds a little better without being off the scale loud and has around 160hp atw. I have somewhere between diddle and no chance of utilising that power to its full extent. Were I to spend the equivalent $ on suspension tweaking and rider training I would ride far faster than by simply bolting on a few extra ponies - and I still would not be able to ride the bike beyond its boundaries.
I know a few people are going to harp on about restricted maps on lower gears and being reprogramable, but you can get TREs and the like which use the map from 5th gear for all gears eliminating restricted maps. Using a TRE, and short turn throttle and going down a tooth at the front will give you all the low down power you need, it won't be excessively loud and will be legal to boot. Hell, I don't have the TRE or 16 tooth sprocket and still enjoy the 10 below 8K.

depends on the bike mate-
u can say that u dont need one..u have 160HP... those with a 6 with say 115 hp can probably use the extra 5hp that they may get out of it... i know id like an extra 5 hp out of my 130?? HP... but what is the point of "too much" or "enough" power??
i want a PC3.. but more for smoothing out the throttle response, than extra HP...

i read an article on tre's a while back which explained that using the fifth gear map in every gear opens the secondary flys early in every gear creating a really lean mix and it was stated thar a tre should only be install with the use of a pc3 or the like to remap and get around this prob , its the same problem with the secondary fly removal, which is effectivly does the same as the TRE.
if i can find the site i'll post it up. has dyno graphs and air/fuel graphs to support claims.

Exactly what ozx6r said.
All the Gipro does is open the seconday flies sooner. If you have removed them, then the GiPro is just a gear indicator.
The TRE does nothing to the timing whatsoever except the timing of the secondarys opening.
Stock is about 6000 RPMS the secondays open fully (same as Gipro OFF)
GiPro soft opens them fully around 4500 RPMS
Gipro Hard opens them fully around 3000 RPMS
If you have removed the secondary flies, then the GiPro does nothing but indicate what gear your in.
Sorry, but in spite of what you may have thought or been told, thats what the GiPro and Ivans TRE's do.[ They do NOTHING to the ignition timming.
Your better off leaving the secondarys in and using the GiPro on Hard which is exactly the same as Ivans TRE.
Anything else is just a placebo effect.
I recommend AGAINST removing the secondarys, not needed if you have a GiPro or TRE. Better throttle response with the secondays in till 3000 RPMs then FULL speed ahead.

My Crim has been dyno'd with the GIPRO on the soft setting and the A/F is spot on. I know it ran like a dog on the hard setting so it would definitely need a PC and remap in that situation.
There is a noticeable difference between nothing and the soft setting, so it's good for that, but the gear indicator is pretty useless. I was talking to another Crim rider on the weekend who had one fitted and he found the same with the gear indicator too.
