A quick bit of research indicates that it might be spoken by as many as 100,000 people in Europe. How would you find them? Do they have signs on their backs?

Not only that, but Afrikaans similarity to Dutch appears to be about the same as it is to English. I checked a few translations and the majority of words that are the same or similar in Afrikaans and Dutch are also the same or similar in Afrikaans and English.

Anyway, back to the point of the post:
S&W, I would have sent him an email in English to see how that went first. A lot of Europeans speak English anyway.

Did you hear back from them yet?

Fwiw I can speak on the Africaans thing with a little bit of background. My parents are dutch, come from Tilburg, 20 minute pushbike ride to Belgium (depending on fitness of rider of course :D) and am asured by my mother that the particular dialect that is spoken around that area is indeed very close to Afrikaans and Flemish...

Write an email in english, what a fuggin good idea Aardy, he;s right in that English is now readily taught all over Europe and not an elective any more, so dependent upon age of the bloke he may well speak English.
