How about an Aprilia?

Might be worth a test ride if nothing else.

Perhaps a Ducati? ST2, ST4 ? Multistrada even?

Ok taking the piss now but this can be had brand spanking new for less than 11 large. And reliable.......well

I'll give you the abbreviated version for sanity sake RR!!!!

Buy BMW R1100RS-Ride to Sydney. Make bathurst on return journey before gearbox goes bang!

New clutch, New gearbox, New paralever bearings and pins, new oils seals! Ride bike home and find incorrect box fitted!!

Ride back to Sydney to have new final drive fitted to match the incorrect gearbox install. Workshop drops bike!

Pick up bike from having been crash repaired and new final drive fitted. Ride to Brissy and back to Melbourne. So far so good!!

Ride bike to Sydney via coast road. Universal joint lets go mid corner and locks momentarily! Bike stranded in Nowra! Uni joint failure causes catastrophic damage to shaft and final drive requiring complete replacement!

Dealer who fitted it all and damaged it denies any liability and won't help. (Watch for a lovely thread about fair traiding once the date has been set ;) )

Owner decides hitting head against brick wall causes brain damage and he really should stop it! Oddly however, he struggles with this as the pain is somewhat enjoyable!

Hence, the decision to reluctantly part with the epitomy of BMW reliability! I am a member here, as well as another Jap bike essentially site and a couple of BMW forums (same Sig if you wanna trawl for it!!!) and one interesting point is that I see loads more catastrophic failures on one BMW site than on all the jappers combined!!!! Add to that my mate's opinion (he is a BMW tech and advised me NOT to buy it in the first place, but I stubbornly thought I'd manage to get a good one....apparently I did!! ) and I won't be back to BMW land in the near future!!! I'll stick with what I know is cheap to buy and run, Jap bikes! :)

Mate, I am thinking of actually buying a bike with a third wheel. I am just waiting for generation two before I do, one that has a little moe than the current model! If you Google this Can-Am Spyder It'll show ya what I mean!!!! As an addition to the two wheelers naturally........(Mind you, in a few decades time when the number starts with a 7 and I can no longer hold a two wheeler up or have lost balance, it may end up as my only form of cycle!!! )

Ducati ST3 ???? - Ducati make hard panniers for em. IMO they have feel exacerry the same to ride as the st 1050 except for that gel seat which is hands down the most comfortable thing ive eva planted my boney little ass on. You godda loove that v-twin sound. 8)

Blackbird ??? - Run out prices under 15, and Honda make nice looking panniers for em too.

If your after a larger land barge wot about a second-hand fjr 13??

Ducatis are awesome. They are also temperamental, expensive and unreliable over long term ownership! So no, No Ducatis!

I like the Idea of owning a twho wheeled jeep! So maybe a 650cc to 1000cc chookie- DL/Versys/Transalp/Tedium, with a Givi set up??? Maybe a semi naked like a FZ1S or a ZRX1200S?????

I want it to be heaps comfy, lightish, grunty-ish (75-100Hp will do), and most of all simple!

Hofy was winding me up on the phone the other day, telling m to get a KLR650! He did a trip up north on one back when he was a wee lad and reckons it was mint! I laughed my guts out when he mentioned one!!! But then I got to thinking, and I read a few reports on the newie, and spoke to a few mates who had them years ago (same motor) and he reckons they are bulletproof, simple, cheap to run and the new one will do 170+kph apparently! Enough anyhoo! I'm gunna test ride one!

I rode the DL1000 and the DL650 wee-strom, and the 650 kicks arse! One of the best things I've ridden. Comfort like I couldn't believe, plenty of go, and simply brilliant handling. 400km range and long-travel spenshun. Get out and ride one of them, I found it a revelation, even compared to the 1000.

It couldn't be worse that the DL1000, it sucked.
