hmmm....Rumbles wrote:definitely cant weld s/steel to cast alloy you either need a new bracket or someone to make you another piece out of alloy and weld it on
Im with Rumbles mate, you will definately not be able to weld Stainless to Alloy.Rumbles wrote:definitely cant weld s/steel to cast alloy you either need a new bracket or someone to make you another piece out of alloy and weld it on
I just paid for my trackday and a new screen.... still have to get a decent set of tires..... I was hoping that I could skimp on this part for this trackday..... The bike was ridden a thousand times like this, so I am not worried about safety.... tis just a requirement that I am trying to fullfill... I find wreckers very hard to deal with.... you ring them up and they wont commit to a price or if they even have it.....the kid wrote:Check the wreckers Mate , a couple of phone calls and you may end up with a solid second hand one .
Some of the alloys don't weld very well at all due to porosity and impurities in them , especially cast alloy .
so how the hell do they attach the stainless fittings to my next doorJetPilot wrote:Im a boilermaker by trade. You can not weld steel, stainless steel, cast iron to aluminium. Only aloy to aloy mate. Stainless to mild steel, yes.
It will definately not be stainless to aluminium mate, Aluminium requires a welder that has an 'alternating current - AC' which will not work on mild or stainless steel, and mild and stainless steels need a welded that uses 'direct current - DC' That is tig welders I am talking about btw. You wil most definately not be able to Mig weld stainless to Aluminium either, the two metals will simply not melt together to form one like they have to to form a weld.Smitty wrote:so how the hell do they attach the stainless fittings to my next doorJetPilot wrote:Im a boilermaker by trade. not so sure
in my tech class*..one of the smartarse students
reckoned you couldn't weld cast iron & aluminium alloy
the lecturer did it
..using an old aluminium cooking pot as the filler rod![]()
(after heating the cast iron exhaust manifold in an oven)
and helium (as I remember) as the gas
*back when Smitty had hair![]()
cheers
