If it idles then dies when throttle applied it could be flooding, which points to crap in your fuel line somewhere. If you're draining the tank, there is a *small* filter inside the tank, check it as they can come unglued and the rubbish will then go into your carby. Trust me, you do not want this to happen, fuel will go everywhere and if it wrecks the seal for the vacuum tap, it will be $400 + to fix. (speaks from experience

welcome i dont know much about your bike... but here are a few general ideas
might not even be the fuel.
a good check would be to remove the hose from the tap and stick it in a bottle of fresh fuel if its vacuum feed it should suck it up..? doesnt this bike have a fuel pump?
not sure if this is a good idea either, but i like to jump start things when they don't work... the extra power/spark may do it good.
check the battery with a multi meter
check the gap width on your spark plugs seeing as you changed them... make sure they are the right spark plugs too.
ohh and don't flood it. that caused me no amount of headaches.
stupid question, but on cold mornings (for carbie bikes) do you have the choke set to full?

thanks for all the detailed replies, its greatly appreciated!
ok so last night what i did was take off the tank again and tried a few things. first what i did was try and blow back through the fuel tap by mouth to see if there was a blockage. i could blow back through and it seemed ok. then i set the tap to PRI and drained a bit of the petrol out into a bottle, it looked ok, and it was regular unleaded.
didnt drain the carbies because i got off the computer before the above posts were made

put the tank back on again with the intention of trying to crank it over with the fuel tap on FUEL, then if that didnt work i was gonna set it to PRI with the hope it might dump some fuel into the carbies.
cranked it over and it started pretty easily! again tried to give it some throttle and it almost stalled, so just left the choke on enough to let it idle at around 2000rpm until it warmed up a bit, then when i gave it some throttle it responded like it should! so i took it for a blat down the street (never rided a bike before so that was interesting) and it seemed to go good so i was happy. now im itching to ride it again but ill wait 2 weeks until i have my L's.
so i dunno if it just had something in the bottom of the tank that was blocking the valve and me blowing into it disturbed it or its something else. ill see how it goes and if i have the problem again i will drain the tank, take the valve of and check it and refil the tank.
thanks for all the help!

may of been a crimped fuel line, and u inadvertantly uncrimped it when u took the tank off....
it may of just been a vapour lock...or stale fuel not igniting....
maybe it was just being a bitch??

Yer carby could be farked ... they develop a leak around the shaft for the butterflies and they go *real* bad they are a bitch to start and idle at either 1000rpm or 3500rpm with the slightest change to the idle adjust (which should be a little plastic knob on the lhs of the bike a bit below the tank). If this is the case (and you can check by putting some oil etc near the butterfly shaft recesses and seeing if it gets sucked through or bubbles etc) then you hafta go grab some new carbies ... you could also loctite them but it won't last.
To start 'em cold if teh carby is poo - start with choke full on, and then grab a tiny tiny bit of throttle and just let the revs drop a bit, then try to take off a bit of choke, and open the throttle a tiny bit more ... keep playing the balancing act until you can 'catch' it from stalling with only the throttle and no choke. Or you can just roll start the bastard and try to keep it running with the throttle.
Make sure you have a good battery

i don't wanna know how you'd recommend 'fixing' that

sometimes they just go absolutely to shit and wont kick over. ask gpxrick after he stalled his 250 at the halfway house and it wouldnt kick over.
no choke, WOT and keep my thumb on the starter for 8-10 seconds, it slowly starts running and eventually does it all itself. Oh yeah it makes a bitchin big BANG as the raw fuel in the zhaust catches on fire too
