24,000k service questions..

Post by quackk »

Hi Folks

Im wanting to give Elvis a once over and have just been told that apparently at 24,000kms the bike is up for a major service.. Cost $1,035+ depending on things like gaskets and shims.. (quote from bikebiz parra)

Can someone confirm if this is true? i had the expectation the bike would need an oil change and thats about it.. lol this is completely the opposite and not something i can forkout right now

Anyhows - right now im googling around for a service manual to see what i do myself..i asked whats included in a major service and he blurted out a few things including:
-valves (nfi whats required here)
- gasket/shims? (nfi whats required here)
- sparks
- coolant
- brake fluid & pads
- oil
- air filter

I've got experience servicing a 250rr when on my L's and P's and think i could probably get away with doing the oil, coolant, sparkies, and maybe brake fluid... ill know better once i get my hands on the service manual...

Does anyone know what else is required for a major service? fork seals / oils ? etc..

Cheers

Yeah let an expert do the major service.... & you do the in between ones
You cant do the valve clearances yourself & thats one of the critical bits.

Dont know where you are based at but I would stay clear of Parra.

Contact Lloyd Penn at Artarmon he does a bang up job without the heavy pricetag or Glen at Allfixed at Castle Hill .....+ He is a site sponsor & all round good guy :kuda:

Or Jamie Aitken is over liverpool way. He runs his own workshop out of Biketek's premises.

But Glen at Allfixed would be my pick.

24000 you need to get your valve clearances checked, not a major job. but fiddly. if it needs valves adjusted, the shims need to be swapped around etc.

coolant easy Job. could do it your self.
Sparkplugs, get the guy doing valves to do it while he's there.
your fluid and pads are fine, i just did it when i put the baraided lines on.
oil change and filter had just been done, so about 24000km would be due.

gaskets, well if you are carefull in removing the rocker cover gasket, it is re-usable. its thick rubber thing. new sealant and its good to go.

happy to help 8)

thanks for all the input folks.. im based out south west... so places like liverpool, castlehill, penrith sound easier to get to than artarmon..
at this stage i would be leaning towards supporting the site sponsor ;)

its a 2006 zx636.. if u've got a copy of this that would be great! sounds like i could get away with only getting the valves worked on.. but ill ring up and check theres nothing else needing to be done that i've missed.

cheers

+ 1 on Kelen Kawasaki at Penrith. I've been using them for years. Every now and again I tried another place, but I don't bother anymore, I can't beat them for price and quality of service. Not sure if they are an official sponsor, but they look after a lot of us here at ksrc......... http://www.kelenkawasaki.com.au/

I know this is an old thread, has anyone used Allfixed lately? My ZRX is due for a major service and I need some guidance on who I should use. FWIW, I called Bikebiz, and they said they'd call me back...no call yet. I spoke with Trooper Lu in Moorebank but they were over $800..ouch! Any comments appreciated.

Booked in for next Tuesday. He's going to check my valves as well as a new rear tyre. He sounds like a good guy. BTW, I called Bikebiz again, still no response. WTF is up with those people. Are they that busy?
