New tyres
New tyres
Hi, I'm looking for feedback on tyres. I need a new set and want some that are more track focused. I lap PI at approx 2.10min, not overly fast I know. I was told my lap time doesn't suit Supercorsa's because with my lap times they won't heat up enough to work properly...? I had Dunlop sportsmart 2's suggested, are they any good..? Any feedback would be great.

Re: New tyres
Is this for a ZX6r?
Road and track or just track?
Do you use tyre warmers?

Re: New tyres
At that pace you could run the pirelli superbike pro slicks I ran them last season got 6 sessions they still look new I lapped PI at 1:57 on them and they were working great using warmers to minimise heat cycles. At 2:10's you would be right for no warmers as they are basically a soft road compound with no grooves. I'm trying to push my times down so changing to the full race slick compounds in sc1 and sc2s. Doing 1:57s at the island on superbike pros was very comfortable pace with another day there I think 1:50's would have been possible without any movement and they would last for ever like more than most people would do ride days in a year!

Re: New tyres
I had the original Dunlop Sportsmarts on my old 2005 r1. Bought the bike them on it, rode 3000kms on road plus 2 Track days at Broadford and they still had about 40% left on them.
Awesome grip when hot. Word of warning, DO NOT pin the throttle if they're cold or you'll end up on the asphalt. But i'd buy them for a road bike any day of the week.

Re: New tyres
I've just put a set of Q3s on my R6 track bike and have to say they are awesome. Done 2 days at winton on them so far and seem to wearing well. I'll definitely using them again.

Re: New tyres
Power 3 or Sportsmarts 2
Whichever you get the best deal on!
Both are grippy enough for occassional trackdays and road riding. Not ideal wet tyres but ride to the conditions if you are caught out.

Re: New tyres
At 2.10's, any modern sports road rubber will work well. Don't bother with slicks unless your into the mid 40's. Otherwise your just pulling yourself. You'll never get them to operating temp and therefore they will offer less grip than the likes of a PR3.

There are really only two questions in life. 1.Which way do i go? 2.What is the lap record?

With no warmers - you want road tyres mate. Sportsmarts are a good tyre for what you want. But really - they just don't make *bad* tyres anymore, it always come down to rider preference and how well your bike is set up ( or isn't....). Some people just prefer one brand over another because it suits their style or their bike etc.......

Re: New tyres
Well my bike likes 003 bridgstones, and I like 003 bridgestones for the track ,I Like M5 metzlers for the road
Mind you sometimes the two will meet on my road bike when I have some half worn bridgestones left over from the track, but the metzlers never meet the 003s on the track.

Re: New tyres
I ran 003s for a long time without warmers on the track ,then with warmers when I got around to getting some.Only difference is you can pretty much go for it after say half a lap with warmers and without I always did say one and a half ,sometimes 2 laps without depending on the temperature on the day with out warmers.z900/zx9 wrote:Well my bike likes 003 bridgstones, and I like 003 bridgestones for the track ,I Like M5 metzlers for the roadMind you sometimes the two will meet on my road bike when I have some half worn bridgestones left over from the track, but the metzlers never meet the 003s on the track.
