Melbournes wet weather and riding

Post by zx102008 »

I pretty much ride to work everyday rain, hail, or shine..!!
I work with a bloke who rides a 96 zx7r and he's very particular about the weather, he's always checking the weather forecast for showers.
If it looks like its going to be a little bit overcast he pulls the pin and drives to work in a nice warm car with the heater on..??? :P
I reckon he's a bit of a, I hate to say but a real SOFTCOCK..!!!
I just can't work out what the go is with blokes like this  :?

I don't get it either, if it's raining, I don't ride. I just don't like to get wet, I also don't like being cold ... I thought nobody did, I didn't realise that it makes me 'soft' :D

Melbournes wet weather and riding

Post by photomike666 »

I used to commute 50km each way, 5am start with bike as my only transport all year round - worked in Preston VIC. Certainly put a few wet KMs on the bike. Didn't bother me much, decent set of waterproofs and ride to the conditions. I've ridden through winter in England too.

Now I work in the city I get the train, can't stand the commuter traffic & people drive worse in the rain. I'm not soft, it's just what's practical.

I used to ride in all weathers back in the UK, snow included, and I actually enjoy riding in the rain on the track, but nowadays I avoid it.
For starters the cold plays havoc with my old injuries, so why have the pain when it's avoidable?
Secondly, other drivers are fuckwits, which is exacerbated in wet weather, add that to slippy road surfaces caused by oil and road markings etc, and I will happily drive the van instead.
And then there is all the extra cleaning and maintenance required, caused by the wet grime that coats the bike after a rain ride.
My bikes aren't my only mode of transport, I ride because I enjoy it, not to get from a to b, why ride if you don't enjoy it? Then again, maybe I'm a softcock :P

This is the sort of bullshit that I can't stand about a certain group. Yeah fair enough you like to ride in rain, hail or shine. Good for you.

The fact that you associate riding in rain with some sort of bravery or skill/competence is a crock of shite. It takes a lot more riding skill to let's say beat a certain time on the track.

Riding in the raining and commuting to work does not take an extra ordinary amount of skill or bravery. Hell, chics on scooters do it.

You have to remember some people choose not to ride because of peak hour traffic drivers, a fully race position bike or the fact that they might need to turn up to work with a suit and a tie or that some people may not have storage at work to keep the gear.

Heck, some days I have to go to a client site and do a presentation. I can't afford to be soaking in my Wet weather gear when I arrive at work.

So get your hand out of the sand and don't assume everyone is a soft cock just because they choose not to ride in rain or in peak hour traffic. You're just being silly and a dimwit.

I commuted ( 25 km each way ) for 18 years on a BMW R65 ... rain/hail/shine/all seasons.

The ex had the car .... occasionally I could have the car in shitty weather - ALWAYS took it. 8)
I've spent over 40 years of my life riding bikes .... the rest of it, I wasted ..

One of the advantages of being in the older demographic, is that the gung ho departs (sometimes) and some semblance of common sense & comfort prevails.
After 40 years of riding, rain doesn't bother me.
So, why do I take the car to work when it's raining and most of the other times as well?...'coz I can and funnily enough,I don't feel like a soft cock when I do. ;)
