I think the main cause is that as we become more affluent we pay others to do it for us.

When I was a kid I had to help dad go up the hill into the timber and cut down trees, bring them back and cut up on the bench saw (run by the PTO on the tractor), and then split it into various sizes from chips to large pieces to burn all night.

My son turns on the control unit for the gas heating on Anzac day and turns it off again on the long weekend in October.
